Today I have struggling on my Lenovo Tiny computer copying, moving or rename files doesn't matter if it's text based files, video files and folders Explorer.exe will totally lock up and crashes.

OS: Windows 11 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3880)
Ethernet Driver: Intel I219-V version 12.19.2.45 / Date 30/01/2022

I haven't changed anything and the latest updates my computer had downloaded was "Definition Updates" which are Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

While transferring I saw that there are some sending and receiving being done while the explorer copying or moving dialog box just hangs and eventually crashes and explorer restarts
Screenshot 2024-08-09 161731.png

I tried taking out the ethernet cabel from the computer to the switch I am using and bam the transfers are starting and finishing normally even renaming works like a clam, and I am wondering if Microsoft is now sending the data of copying, moving and renaming files to their stats?

Could it be sending copies (network sharing) to your OneDrive or some other such backup device/service?

I don't have any online shares added, I don't use onedrive, terabox, dropbox, mega box or what they are called.

I have 3 drives attached to this computer.
C Drive - Gigabyte M30 1TB
D Drive - Samsung 850 EVO 1TB
P Drive - Seagate Exos X16 16TB

So I do not know what's going on, but after an update over 13hours the problem has done away and everything is functioning normal again, I hope it's not just another MS attempt to try to do something they shouldn't do.

If you have "Automatic sample submission" in "Windows Security" -> "Virus & threat protection settings" turned on, try turning it off and see if the problem persists.

Interesting, I have already disabled Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission

Only other thing I can think of right now would be to try a different file manager. I assume you used the standard windows file explorer for this? You could try and download FreeCommander or something similar to see if the problem is exclusive to file explorer or applies to all file operations. If you use FreeCommander make sure to check in "Tools" -> "Settings" -> "File/Folder operations" that it is set to the right method.

What drive were you deleting that file from?

Today it was the sata ssd, but I have experienced the same on the nvme and hdd.

There was still about 160Kbps download and upload showing the task manager than I unplug the ethernet cable and boom the file gets deleted or moved to the recycle bin depending on if I press Shift+Delete or just Delete.

Possible the ethernet controller has gone bunk, can you swap ports on the switch or change cables?

Task manager/performance/ethernet find what process is sending copy of your files over the net. Hopefully it's Microsoft and not someone else

There is only one ethernet port in this computer a Intel I219-V maybe a driver issue not sure.

Nah I doubt at around 160Kbps that it can transfer even 2 or 10GB files at this rate before the deleting starts than it would take days

As said before I cannot find anything in the logs, nur when I check with Glasswire I have not seen a program I do not know.

But if I really have to reinstall I would likely go with Windows 11 IoT Enterprice LTSC because I have license to get it activated even this machine is embedded with a Windows Pro license.

Im saying on the modem/router

I will try to have a look, but I am locked in to a coaxial sagemcom modem\router from my isp since it's a cable tv connection I use since fiber here is fucked as shit for a lot of peopl specially in prime time where mine just works same speed, same latency 24/7 now so I do not complain on a 1000/500 which runs about 965/525.

It's a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q specs:
Intel Core i5-8500T
Crucial 32GB DDR4 (System specified)
Gigabyte M30 1TB NVME
Samsung 850 Evo 1TB SATA
Seagate Exos X16 16TB

It doesn't matter if it's in the nvme, sata ssd or hdd when it's a problem.
well, the CPU isn't top notch either...

but, I too experienced Explorer "hangs", but with search bar or address bar, working in shared LAN folders. Same performance low-end (by these days) CPU, I highly doubt such freezes would be using some modern high-clocked at least 6 full "performance" core CPU like i5-12600KF or Ryzen 5 7500F for example.

I do not do it over network I do it locally with monitor, keyboard and mouse connected.

It's fine for what i do but I really wish I had the money to use on a am5 system like Ryzen 7 8700G, Asrock Deskmeet X600 so I could also do some gaming of older games I enjoy that doesn't require a lot to run while I also do some of my server stuff.

Windows 11 22 and 23H2 are more "buggy" even these days. Recently I have tried using 21H2 and man, no bugs were, fckin stable system! But, as we all know, we "need" to use "never and greater" OS, even it's sh*tty buggy. So I just keep using 10 wherever it's possible without obvious troubles where 11 would be better (on never HW).

Maybe it's simply a windows11-related (operating system) bug?
I think you can work with Linux, so I would just use a Linux ‘permanent USB’ and see if you see the problem then too.
You can then add NTFS-3G and FAT32 support to the permanent Linux USB stick.
After that, you can also write/read files to the windows partition to see if you still have problems with that drive or not (using Linux).
This way, you can see if the problem is windows-related only, or rather a hardware problem.

My main issue is, I do not want to run linux on this because it's not usb related, only thing I have not really tried is like a usb to ethernet dongle to really see if it is the onboard lan or if it's Windows related.

I see you have a PLEX drive

By any chance, I am assuming that drive connects to your plex server? That may be a culprit.

You could unmount that drive and then test the transfer stuff with network and see if the issue still persists.

It doesn't matter if the Seagate Exos drive is connect or not, still happens.

That's why I believe it's more software in Windows 11 than a hardware issue because it's not always it happens it's randomly happens.

I will try a borrowing a TP-Link UE300 version 3.0 from work to see if it happens on this one but problem is that when it's not always and the size of the file doesn't matter it's annoying to troubleshoot.
