I have a motherboard which will take an Intel Pentium D Dual Core 3.2 GHz 940.
So I ordered one up.
I then noticed it has 64 bit extended memory technology.
Will this run my 32 bit software OK?
Does it require two memory slots to be filled as well?

Yes it will definately run 32bit software.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Do you think it was an overkill to get that cpu?

No that is quite an old cpu by todays standards. What do you plan on using it for.

I plan to use it for just general run of the mill stuff. Nothing high end like games.Use my xbox for that and am disappointed about the abomb glitch in oblivion - gave them an Egregious Award on my new web site I put up for fun -

Yes, it may be a bit old, but should be better than my 2002 compaq I've been using.

Thanks again for your help.

Well you might be better off getting a core2 processor for less which not only will perform better but use less power and save you money.

Since I've already ordered it, changing the order now may be a bit of a challenge. This MB will take an 820, but they are the same price. Unless the performance change will be dramatic, I could go with what is comming, prehaps. I should have asked the question here first, and did not.

I only suggested a core2 because of thier power efficiency and low thermal output. You wouldn't notice the difference in performance because you are only using it to browse etc.

That's fine. I understand. Thanks.
Will this 64 bit tech. require two memory slots to be filled?

No it doesn't require two memory slots to be filled but if two are it results in extra performance.

actually, the D940 is quite a beast, it was 4th in place for the best pentium before the duos.
the only better were the D945 D960x and D965x. Ive got a D830 running in my htpc, and it is every bit as fast OCed at 3.8GHz as my 8500 is stock in the operating system. Speaking of which, for the OP, would you be willing to trade me for that 940 you have? ill pay your shipping + cash. LMK!!
He is right tho, if you can find a core2, you will be better off, for gaming, if you can crank a D up pretty high, its pretty quick.

The features of EM64T are only used if you have a 64-bit operating system like Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Server 2003 x64 Edition, Vista x64, or Server 2008 x64 Edition.

And you need to order the custom Intel media if you go with XP/Server 2003.
Microsoft crammed the IA64 version on the 64 bit discs also so it would appear universal. ;-)

Nice comments. I may be able to stop the order for the 940 and go with the 830. Same price. I am going to run 32 bit XT or server 2003.

Recommend XP unless you got clients that need secure logins and the whole nine yards (Active Directory Domain).
