OK so after a decade of using Nvidia cards I bought my first ATI - and uninstalled every file containing the word 'nvidia'...

I went to play Cryostasis, and it told me that I need Nvidia physx.

I'm gaming on the desktop "Black Panther" rig in my system specs. I've got just one pci-e slot in the mobo so it's obvious that I can't use my previous nvidia card for physx and equally obvious I'd be choosing the 5970 to have installed and not the 8800GT.

Now, what is this game demanding re physx? I mean can I just go to the nvidia site and download the physx driver? Does ATI have its own physx drivers? I'm using catalyst 10.1

Nice.
Oh also, I wouldn't run cryostasis with physx on anyway.
The game is by far to demanding and your mouse will likely lag.

Really it's just badly optimized..lol
really pretty though. :)

I would also set sound levels to minimal acceleration and go with emulated if you don't have a soundcard.

yeah I was surprised how overworked my GPU/Physx (8600) cards were... considering the game didn't really look great. It had an atmosphere and I could have enjoyed it if it wasn't making both of my 4870s run in overdrive. only game that has done that.

You can just download the Physx software from nvidia. I had to do this to run Vantage after I uninstalled and cleaned all nvidia drivers from my system.

Just to be clear, reinstalling vantage will give the same results, and the physX package is more light-weight.

A lot of games REQUIRE the physx executables to be installed these days , so it`s wise to always have them . Cryostasis is really demanding on any system (I`ve heard it called ludicrous). Try switching physics on and off in the options to see the difference.

What I don't understand is why you have to install "Phsyx" in order to run games, which if you don't have an Nvidia card, will be a moot point, as you won't be using any "Physx?"

Sorta like Ageia?

Anyways, Cryostasis has pretty awful performance even without the Physx features turned on(which causes a conflict if you aren't using the proper GPU).

it's not moot.

games that use PhysX, use it whether you have a card or not.
what your card does is give hardware acceleration to the physics so you can see more than just little fluttering.

in other words, PhysX doesn't require a card, but it is pretty worthless without it.

Mmm but that's kinda the point... for the average person "Physx" is a specialization of the game's physics engine, allowing more visual quality and performance. To that same person "Physx" is not the actual engine and is not necessary to run the content.

It just seems like what should be an option, a bonus, has become integrated into what is a requirement.

It is highly demanding - puts Crysis and STALKER: Clear Sky/Call of Pripyat to shame.

Although, when I played the Cryo demo, I was able to run the advanced phsyics somewhat decently . . . it's only at certain points where it really fell on it's face - large areas and the typical physics-laden spots. Haven't tried the retail version of the game to see if there's any difference . . .
