I am researching ddr3 memory , and there are some really nice 2 X 4gig sets... many under 100..
My question is FOR OVERCLOCKING.. only focused on cpu speed and not mem chip focused, is here advantages or disadvantages to getting a 2 X 8 gig set verses a 2 X 4 gig set of mem chips.. I will be doing water cooling with my old wet rig, deciding on boards and chips now and I don't think the size of the chips memory should affect the cpu speeds as the mem itself can be tuned by most all boards in the oc realm... or am I missing something vital?

Thanks for the hand holding its amazing how a little time, a little tech change and memory fade( mine) and Im back here asking noob questions...
one of the nicest forums ever fyi

:D

I'd recommend 4x4 if you want 16 gbs of ram or 2x4 if you want 8gb. The lower density chips tend to perform very slightly better and I've heard fully populating your slots is favorable for stability. I couldn't tell you why.

ok, i think you missed my real question
only regarding overclocking the cpu.. not memory.. with the size of the chips and there speed make any difference whatsoever? Im only interested in my cou benchmarks not the system scores...

Depends on the CPU and the individual ram kits used. 4 double sided sticks will be harder than 4 single sided sticks or 2 double sided sticks, 4 single sided sticks will be no different than 2 double sided sticks.

im doing a water build test system... no real applications in gaming etc..
using a 4770k

where are your stars ?
