Decided to go with Windows 10

I am ready to build a new PC from the ground up and was planning on using a brand new retail copy of W7 Pro. I've read that there might be some compatibility issues installing W7 on a new Z170x MB, whether that's true or not I really can't be sure.

So, I decided to go with a new retail copy of W10 Pro and upon further investigating I understand that the Flash drive W10 comes installed on will only work using a 2.0 USB slot, not a 3.0 USB.

The new MB (Gigabyte Z170x G7 Gaming) I'm using only offers 3.0 USB on the back and my new case (Phanteks Enthoo Evolv) has just 3.0 USB connections on it.

This will be a fresh installation on an Intel 3.0 x4 MLC 400gb SSD.... So, my question is how do I install W10 if it will only work using a 2.0 USB connection ?

I've been using a USB 3 stick on USB 3 port fine on 3 desktops, 3 laptops. They all installed fine. Try to make a new stick with the new build. Installation is hella fast if you got a SSD. 5 min install top.

Thats a new one for me!...
Windows 10 on usb 2.0 stick won't install windows from stick on usb 3.0 connection :confused:

Just re-read the OP's topic. Why don't you create a new usb stick with MS's media creation tool?

I'm pretty sure it's only a problem with add-on controllers (Renesas, Etron, etc.) that boards required until Intel started integrating the ports with the 7 series PCH. Even my friend with a 2015 MacBook Pro, which just has 3.0 ports I'm pretty sure, had no issues getting Windows 10 on there from the original stick. I'd have to do some experimentation myself, but will be difficult to find time to.

I was reading a little about that. I'll need to go back and look into that option a bit more thoroughly. Not sure if that is used for doing an upgrade from a previous version of windows or allowing one to use it as a fresh install, but that may be the solution I need.
I haven't attempted the installation yet, still waiting for it to arrive, but from the information I've searched so far, looks like installing W10 directly from a 3.0 USB will not work.

It can be used for both situations.

The new ISO which you can legally download with the media creation tool is the latest build which lets you use Win 7/8 key as well as allowing new installs without keys. They also optimized the install protocols and it's really fast with a SSD.

I know, seems silly. But I gather it's an issue with MS not making it compatible with 3.0 USB connections for whatever reason. But they never make anything easy.

I'll go back and re-read the install options from MS and look for that option for installing.

What you need to do is simple. If you have the key, that is all you need. Use the media creation tool to create a bootable USB 3 Win 10 install stick and use it. Enter the key during install and done. Just keep the original Win 10 USB stick as ... memento.

This is the first I hear of this, and think it might not be true. Why would motherboard manufacturers make boards like that. I think this might happen to people with PEBCAK.

I understand that the Flash drive W10 comes installed on will only work using a 2.0 USB slot, not a 3.0 USB.

This seems highly unlikely. But good luck in your research.

Sounds easy enough...I'll update you when I receive W10 and do the install. I'm assuming that I'll need a clean USB 3.0 flash drive....thanks a bunch

Do a google search if interested and that will update you on this W10 issue.
