Got a new G4560 and this runs fine with 2c/4t, so it was the CPU!

Holy crap, this is shaping up to be the most expensive Pentium system in 2017. And then I'm not even counting the hours you spent analyzing the problem. You should send Intel a letter kindly requesting them to reimburse you. They actually might.

I mean they've failed miserably on quality control, and you are paying the bill bigtime right now. I reckon you've already paid enough for an i5 if you count time and wrong RMAs. And that's not even taking into account the uselessness of the Z chipset.

Add my first Pentium G3258 (unlocked) to the list - it would seem to boot, but never had output to the monitor. After swapping out every part but the CPU and motherboard, still no video, so I RMA the CPU, and that fixed the problem. Both are Pentiums, with new features (unlocked multiplier, Hyper Threading), both are very cheap - maybe Intel's QC is not as stringent on budget parts?

Weird, my old delidded G3258 ran about an year @ 4.8GHz without problems. Maybe you just had a "monday sample" like I had with my previous G4560?
