well i got this non-working optiplex. by not working, i mean the bios does not recognize any cd drives, hard drives or even floppy drives. after a bit of research i learned that dell recalled many of the boards for bad capacitors. I located the bad capacitors and replaced them with new ones. The problem is, that the original problem did not go away. The bios still does not recognize any IDE drives. Any ideas? i wanted to fix it up and give it to my friend's mom as she could use a computer...

Contact a certified Electrician & see if hes willing to have a look at the board for you. but most likely he will refuse or charge an amount that goes beyond what the systems worth.

you tried - you failed. scrap it bag it dump it & see if you can pick up another 2nd hand machine for your friends mom.

if she just wants a simple setup for net browsing & the occasional video - those sort of systems can be had for very little.

Maybe try flashing the BIOS. From what I remember of the GX270 is that when the caps when the system was dead. No boot.
