Hi guys,

A couple of my clients computers have been recording the following in their event log.

"Event ID - 51 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation"

Their computer symptoms vary from Windows crashing to BOS to not showing any symptoms at all, I've been looking about the web for solutions to this error and it seems to be VERY common but little information is known about it.

One thing I've noticed is it occurs on old and brand new PC's despite many forums saying "your HDD is old and it's about to fail back up everything". I've just install a brand spanking new PC for one client and it's showing up in their event log on a regular basis. The computer runs fine but every now and then they get a windows update and the BIOS looses sight of the HDD completely, it needs to be physically disconnected and connected again for the computer to boot again.

Any help or insight into the cause of this error would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I would look for something in common on the systems.
Same OS?
Same Mobo (with same on-board disk controllers)
If using a discreet raid controller is it the same make/model?
Same type of HDDs? (brand or IDE or SATA or SCSI)
Is it a particular application that they have in common that is generating the event log entries?

Not much help, but you have to start somewhere.

99% of the cases mean that your Hard Drive is bad :banghead: The only way to fix it is to buy a new one. Back up your Data ASAP before it's too late.

Sorry for the bad news.

If you want you can go to: run -> cmd -> type chkdsk /f in dos , but I don't think it's going to do any good.

Good luck!

Chances are your HDD is fine.
They are mostly buffered memory I/O requests that fail and are retired by the OS.

Information about Event ID 51 may help explain a little.

If it is continuous and accompanied by additional (other) system event codes then it is possibly a drive failure.

You may wish to run a drive diagnosis utility from your drive's manufacturer's website to test the drive and eliminate that possibility.

Thanks Viper I agree, I don't think the HDD's are failing because I have ran the manufacturer diagnostics on them and they show up fine, in my most recent case with a new PC the Events are clustered in 2 to 3 logs at a time, no other errors are happening though. In other cases with older PC's I've seen this error coupled with other errors which could be the reason why I've seen such a variety of symptoms from PC to PC, some with this error crash and others show no symptoms at all so it kind of reinforces your theory of it being Buffered memory I/O requests.

I have been getting this on my work laptop ever since it was encrypted. Not all the time, only at start up and not every time.
