direct die temps

hello,

Do you have any advices on this. I can't compare with a normal processor, because I bought the cpu delidded, I just removed the lid, and cleaned again the die. After installing with an old XSPC Raystorm waterblock, I find it strange that under load the temperature gets hot very fast, from 30 to 60 degrees in an instant.
On the gpu it goes from 30 to 40.

Is the waterblock damaged and needs lapping? I fastened the screws as much as possible without damaging the die. I am not using springs, don't have them...

Or this is normal? The CPU die is much smaller then GPU, but still the power consumption is half or so.

thats around normal for a 9900k, dd only give a few c difference if your lucky.
 
Dedicated direct die waterblocks with a DD frame from someone like Thermal Grizzly will be better. Also make sure you're using liquid metal.
 
I am using der8auer frame. thermal grizzly kryonaut . Are you sure conductonaut matters?
 
you need to use LM to make it work its the whole idea around dd cooling bud but even then you will most likely get a 2 to 5 c reduction.
 
i guess the whole idea for direct die is to loose one piece of the sandwich. die+paste+ihs+paste+waterblock theoretically it's worse then die+paste+waterblock. You loose paste+ihs. isn't it?
 
it is that too but LM is a big part of getting it to work other wise you not going to see the benifit because its limited by the paste.
 
OK, thanks. I will try that and maybe waterblock lapping. But first I want to use it a little.
 
The 9900k is soldered, so using paste is literally a downgrade.
 
make sure to watch a few vids on youtube before you apply LM it can be tricky stuff. goodluck not that you will need it.
 
you can allways learn more, ive been in the trade for near 30 years and im still learning bud.
 
of course. I've had a nvidia 2080 that had liquid metal under the gpu, and memory. Someone applied it badly. But the 9900 does not have any smd's near the die, so it's not that risky.
for gpu's you can use https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32959674287.html to cover the capacitors. I've never tried it, because I never used LM.
 
Nowadays there's also the new Kryonaut Extreme pink bubblegum. ;)
 
thermal conductivity for pink is 14.2W/mk and for LM is 72. I guess carbonaut is an alternative since it has 62.5w/mk and it has 0.2 mm thickness. It also protects the die a little.
 
For larger gaps its better to use a thermalpad, without the IHS the gap is much bigger.
 
better after lapping the waterblock and installing conductonaut. the waterblock wasnt's that flat to begin with....
But now it's ok, at least the delta is lower from core 0 to core 7.

I feel strange to play with such a small die, and the custom mount xspc raystorm. in my spare time I repaired over 100 nvidia cards, and I encountered some cracked dies.
Now I must familiarize with this generation overclock. Last one was xeon 1650 v2 with an asus x79 mainboard from 2013:)
