I wanna know what is the best HDD Defrag software out there...

ppl said that the inclueded in Windows sucks.

i agree with Mike0409, defraggler is defiantly the best. i have used it on every operating system I've owned/used and it is by far the best, it even tells what files are fragmented
 
Freeware i like UltimateDefrag although there is a payware version and it does a better job.. For example if you consolidate with the old version it puts most used on the out side and less used far as possible from the rest.

Now the new version it puts the most used on the out side still but it placed the less used right after it.

If i was going pay for a high priced defrager it would have to be Diskeeper but keep in mind that DK set ya back like $50 and UD for $22.

I use Diskeeper09. Very good background automatic defrg and nice graphic display.

I find the Vista defragger slow and definitely miss the GUI:(
 
I agree with you mnm121, the Vista defrag does not give you any indication of what it's doing, how far along it is or any information at all. Not sure why they pulled the GUI off it.

I use it anyway. I don't do enough installs/deletes to really need a seperate defrag program. I just run Vista's every few months.
 
I use PerfectDisk 10, does a great job.
 
Ultimate defrag. lets you arrange the files as you wish, you can put the files you care about (games, OS) at the start of the drive where its faster.
 
I use auslogics disk defrag. Simple and fast.
 
I use a program called Perfect Disk

I just use Windows defrag.:)

Free app: best is Windows in-built. Seriously.
Paid: my preference is Diskeeper 2k9 Professional. Use it on both my XP system currently.

I've used so many others a few years ago and they never seem to work right for me. Sometimes, they didn't defrag all the files. Other times the computer became noticeably slower. PerfectDisk has been the best program I've used for sometime now.
 
i like using perfect disk for the simple reason that it lets you defrag all your hard drives simultaneously. when your takin about 4x hard drives (2x 1tb, 1x500gb, 1 320gb) it adds up to alot of time
 
m thanks for bringing up this topic, been wanting to know what a good defrag program to use. Currently running Ultimate Defrag (10hrs 57mins) till completion haha.

On another note, with my hardrive working to move files around, should I still be surfing the net, chatting with friends online? If so can I go futhur to playing games like tf2 while defraging?

O&O and ultimate defrag also let you do this.

You can do whatever you want, but remember that files in use cannot be defragmented, and load times will be noticeable worse. I game while defragging my OTHER drives, and i watch media off those other drives when defragging my games drive :)

Mmm well right now im only running 1 500gb drive and everything is on this drive. I plan on putting in more in the future but as of this moment, if I play games then as you said the "game files" will not be defraged. Is it possible that after the program finishes I run it again and leave my pc running idle, then it will defrag those game files correct? The 2nd time running should be much faster as I have not defraged my pc since Jan?

that depends on the program, and defrag method used. For example if you use O&O's name defrag which sorts alphabetically, you could end up with the example below

Fragmented:

- Steam - Itunes - Windows -TF2

Defragged with TF2 in use
Itunes- Steam - Windows - TF2

so when you do the second pass, it goes le siiiiigh, and has to move all that data back a few GB's, in order to fit TF2 where it belongs. its going to take a lot longer, since it has to do it all twice.

Ah... wow thats a big hassle.... I guess best time to run defrags are when your sleeping at night.

the "fast" defrags, dont re-arrange files at all. all they do is grab fragmented files, and fit them wherever they fit on the drive. That often leaves little chunks of free space lying around, so that when you run low on space you get nastily fragmented files scattered over the whole drive.

Thats why i prefer to do a name defrag every few weeks/months, it gets them back to that "freshly formatted" feel.
