display driver stopped responding and has recovered error

Hi All,
I have a issue that hopefully can be resolved. Just recently, I upgraded from a GTX 780 to a GTX 980 SC. Didn't see much of a difference so I cashed out and got a GTX TITAN X EVGA model. Loving the GPU except for one issue.

Lately, I've been checking my temps to make sure all is good at all times which it is BUT sometimes my game will crash or during idle, I'll get the error "Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered". I've looked everywhere and tried all kinds of fixes stated online but to no avail. Has anyone else had this issue? To note, with the other GPUs I had, I didn't monitor my temps so idk if the MSI Afterburner program could be causing it.

Please see specs below

-=-=-=--
OS - Windows 8
GPU - GTX TITAN X
Motherboard- ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU - Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell Quad-Core 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W BX80646I74770K Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics

My casing has 5 built in fans and I purchased a good CPU fan so cooling is not a issue. Also, I have all my drivers up to date.

Please let me know what you guys think!

Thanks in advance!

Have you done a fresh install of newer NVidia drivers?

Make sure you check the custom install when installing drivers and check the perform a clean installation box on the next screen.

I get this message every single time my laptop comes out of "Sleep" option. I just ignore it. Everything works alright. It's a bit annoying, but I can't find the reason and as long as it works I can't do anything about it. I hope you find your solution. :)

They are saying to downgrade from my current version, you think I will have stability issues with GTA and/or Witcher 3 since that version isn't optimized for those games?

Yeah, a fair few people are playing Witcher 3 without the optimised drivers just fine. If you're experiencing "driver stopped working..." error message, time to downgrade until the next Beta or WHQL.

Just the version before this started to happen for you
Cool, was just checking and it seems that a new driver was released yesterday. I will try this one and if the issues continues, I will rollback.

Thank you for the help!

I have a fix, at least worked for me.
But I wasn't the one who came up with this fix.
I've read it on nvidia forums.
Go to your NV control panel >> Setup surround, PhysX >> Set the PhysX to CPU instead of auto.
I Purchased a 970 last week and some of games were freezing then driver was crashing and recovering, after doing that it didn't happen since.
Give it a try :D

I had a similar issue with my old GTX 570. Games would randomly crash out and there would be no signal received by my monitors - also the Drivers stopped responding issue occurred multiple occasions. Rebooting the machine would normally resolve the issue for a few days until eventually my machine started to reboot during boot and often wanted me to run Startup repairs. Turned out my PSU was on its last legs as once I swapped it the issues went away and I didn't receive any further problems.
