Do you like ported or sealed subwoofers?

I have a subwoofer from SVS and it's ported. I put the port plugs in, because I have a smaller room and I kinda like it. But I like the ported effect too. But I think since I am in a small room, I'll keep it sealed for now. I play games, movies and music.

What do you guys prefer ported or sealed and why?

I like ports for shear boom, I like sealed for tightness :)

Half way. I like mine ported but muffled with a bit of thin foam or pillow stuffing. Still provides the boom, but without the overpowering resonance effects.

Sealed if given the choice. Need more, add more watts!

@jarablue
really depends on what driver and if its car/home, and what its used for (music/movies).
usually ported means more low end while sealed tends to be tighter (using same driver).

many put woofers in the corners of a room, and making it louder/boomier than it needs to be.

Mine is closed, by conception, so ... I like it closed :)
An vintage Mosscade Titan 11.2, 2 x 32 cm loudspeaker in push / pull config'.
Such a monster !

My friends dad had some high end British Hi-Fi in the late 80s and early 90s. No subwoofers needed.. I wish we could go back to those times for sound quality. Because holy shit.

Yes at least to the old bookshelf speaker's which housed 8" woofers :), only need subs now as speakers have gotten tiny.

Would be nice if some one started to make the good ol 10\12" speakers and not have to buy kits and just market it as Got space we have what you want.

they didnt even have much music that would even have low end signals, basically started with car audio and movies that ppl started using subs.
ignoring not everyone wants to see two 6ft speakers next to their tv, just to have enough space to run some 12in.
i can easily hide a sub and only have satellites (visible).
and there are enough brands that do a decent job SQ wise (ill take some powered 12s dual coil from JL any day over "better" towers).

Agree with you, I'm using it only for Cinema, not music.

I prefer side or bottom loaded radiators, otherwise I prefer the smooth rolloff of a sealed box.

I've got a Sony bottom mounted speaker bar on the TV and a ported Sony bluetooth connected woofer box on the floor, these being together as a set when bought.
it's a mix of volume and boom, really more volume than boom but it's there too.

@Bones
if you an still find one, the HT ZF9.
the first time i had all stuff on the shelfs move, when the Star Destroyer passes (did demo using SW) at normal vol levels.

@Waldorf I believe that's what I've got already.

I'll have to grab a pic of what I've got and post it.

Ported with the LFE unit enclosed 5 of 6 box sides, with front outwards only.

I tried running my NAD AVR the other day, it does not want to live for some reason. I have an even older Marantz that I might dig out. It is a good match for my Mirage towers, and my Monitor Audio FB-210 pretty much goes with anything haha.

But I like my soundbar too, just a JBL Bar 700, but it sounds great for movies and games, but sorta falls on its face with music, it is very much dependant on its source, but most of the time it sucks.

The AVR setup takes up so much space though. Ugh.

I think when I turn fiddy I will get myself that nice SVS that I have been looking at for years.
