Doesn't find all RAM!

My friend's system is a Packard Bell desktop (I'll find out specific model eventually, am at work) that has 2x1GB DDR2 RAM in it. Both sticks are working on their own, they've been Prime-tested. When both of them are in the system however, BIOS will only detect 1024MB and Windows 7 detects 1.5GB but only 1GB is usable.

Why is this? Any ideas? I haven't found any Memory Remap feature in the BIOS, but on Packard Bell's website it says that it supports 4GB.

some may be used by the onboard video card that is likely present in such a system

is the ram you have put in the board new. Ie added after you bought the PB setup?

She's added in a 9800GT, so no onboard graphics is active.

As far as I'm aware, the extra gig was added in later on, but I'm not sure. She didn't seem sure either when I asked her, I'll try again.

as mussels said we need more info, to give you valuable info back. The board my not support 2 gig or you may just need to update the bios. Either way mussels is correct we do need more info

pentium D implies socket 775, which makes sense with DDR2 ram.

now we just need chipset and motherboard.

This is the computer she's got and this is the motherboard. It says it supports up to four gigs, so that's not the problem.

I've already suggested a BIOS update and we'll probably try that tonight.

It'd be somewhat strange if the RAM was bad since both sticks work fine on their own. When you pair them though, you get this problem as well as a random reboot during every startup (it starts, does the POST, reboots, loads normally).

perhaps the ram is running too fast/too tight timings for the northbridge. it is one of ATI's earliest motherboard chipsets.

try lowering the ram speed and/or turning up ram/NB voltages, if its possible

Havnt seen packard bell since back in early 1990s! but ive seen that they do not sale to america anymore. my first PC was a referbed packard bell bought from walmart back in 1994.

Alright, the BIOS has been updated but the problem persists. Suggestions?

did some research on the board.

Looks like this is a common issue.

MAke sure the memory is 1.8v

and that it is 533mhz or slower. 667 causes weird behavior and bsod's

also it looks like double density memory can cause issues.

also on a side note. you said you upgraded the video card to a 9800, did you go in bios and disable the onboard?

I'll do some checking in the BIOS when I get home and see what speed the RAM is. If the original 1GB stick was a 667, the one that was added in later most likely is as well.

I have no idea if the onboard is active or not as none of these upgrades were carried out by me personally, I'll confirm when I get home.
