Draining Loop ? (1st time ever)

Hi guys,

Just about to add my 1080 Classified to my loop.

However this is the first ever water loop I've owned. So I've never, ever, had to drain one before (ever).

If possible I'd like to save the water.

It's still *only 2 months old* and is 100ml "EK coolant" mixed with 900ml of "Mayhems Ultra Pure H2O" and 'silver kill coil' included since the beginning.

Here's a picture:

Any suggestions how I can do it safely?

Have a great day,

the res is on the bottom.....couldnt be any easier bud. tilt n drain.

if you really have no idea where to start...id recommend you Watching it done first....just go onto Youtube, and watch a vid or two, dont over think it, and dont rush it......its not that tough

remember...distilled water is the best coolant. (personally) i wouldnt save fluid, but if You MUST, your adding an extra step of difficulty....just be certain to use a CLEAN recepticle to hold the Fluid

Reason I want to save the fluid is because I've bought some "conductonaut" liquid metal. And I've just finished putting my card into block. But I want to see what temps are like without the liquid metal first (and make sure I haven't already broken anything) before I use the liquid metal). So don't want to waste fluid. (got normal non-conductive paste on there for now).

In the U.K. you can't buy distilled water or coolant from a shop or a garage or even supermarket. You have to order it all online.

I've got fresh stuff sitting there but I don't want to use it with this "intermediate" step of checking everything working before upgrading to the conductonaut liquid metal.

Damn son, that Rad to CPU block tubing is bent af. Consider investing in an angled fitting for that particular area.

As for draining, see above. Gravity is your friend. Most people put a T-line fitting at the bottom of their loop to make drainage easy. I strongly recommend using fresh coolant (distilled water only, it's cheap and your kill coil will do the rest of the work), because whatever container you pour your old coolant into is going to have residue in it.

Actually you can. B&Q, Homebase, hell, even Morrisons has 2 Litre bottles of the stuff. Might be called De-ionised water.

Why are your RAMs in slot A2/B2? Should be A1/B1 for best performance no?

Just tilt the case and dump out of the res as mentioned. You can save the coolant by capturing it in a clean container if you really want, a 2l soda bottle rinsed with isopropyl would be sufficient IMO. I would just dump it and run distilled/deionized with some biocide, cheap & best solution. A t fitting in the outermost hose going to the front RAD will facilitate easier draining next time around.

It can be helpful to have a bleed valve at the top to allow the water to drain easily, or just crack off one of the top fittings while your drain is open at the bottom. You won't be able to get all of it out so I'd find something to bung or clamp the pipes with while you're putting the gpu in the loop.

I second using fresh coolant but it's up to you, as mentioned above, make sure your container is spotless before you do this.

Also.. You've got 5 fans blowing into the case and 1 at the back (I think there's one at the back?). Might be worth re-doing the top rad as an exhaust while you're busy working on the loop. Your call tho.

Enjoy the 1080 :D

+1 on the de-ionised water (car battery fluid). The more shit in your loop - the more likely you'll get some gunk build up - no matter what mayhems and EK tell you. It is sales after all.

And FFS man - make your loop sexy, even if nobody can see it (close up my 1st Titan under water).

you sure you've not got mixed up? the slots are coloured coded for ease of installation.

for dual-memory mode its either red + red or black + black
I've actually got 2 more modules but they have been temporarily removed because I'm pushing for higher 3dmark benching scores the the 2 older 'removed' modules won't overclock as high (even though they are factory rated at 2133). The remaining ones are only rated at 1866 (so the 1866 ones O/C higher than the 2133 chips) lol

? On my old AMD FX motherboard (nothing is colour coded lol).

I thought about putting coloured coolant through it and some lighting but I heard colour "stains" cooling equipment.

Seems either way works, and by the manual, your in dual channel with the RAM in those slots.

As to your color question... I always opted to buy colored tubing and ran distilled water through them. Your homework on color additives is correct, it ends up dyeing the reservoir, the tubing, radiator, and will be in the blocks(left behind, needing to be cleaned). It can properly be cleaned easily if you don't mind disassembling everything to do it and throwing away the tubing. Been there, done that! Just be thorough, as a little dye left somewhere will screw with your color if you want to change it later.

Colored tubing works really well rather than colored coolants and dyes for some added extravagance. I've used pink dye, red coolant, and I've decided to stick with water.

Other main suggestion is what @RCoon said and think about some angled fittings to allow smoother and/or tighter bends for your tubing. You'll be happy you did.

Add a drain line to the loop while you have it empty.

I actually wouldn't save the water. Now is a good time to change it out after your initial setup to get all of the particulates (that you get with a new system) out of the loop.

I thought deionised water was different from distilled water?

Essentially the same thing, just that deionized water takes the filtering to an extreme level of not leaving anything in it, where distilled water may still have some minor contaminants present.

If you have a reverse osmosis system under your kitchen sink with a separate little tap, you can just use that too. I've been using it for years.

Not always, my MB manual says: For 2 stick of RAM use slots A2/B2 for dual channel.
