DSL Problem

I have a DSL connection from AT&T. Its a 1.2Mb Connection (Don't Laugh). Once every hour or so I have to restart the modem because my speed drops below 400Kps... Im sick of it. Its on a WRT54G router. With 3 people pulling a connection from it. 2 wired. 1 Wireless. Noone is torrenting or downloading anything. Im about to start Pc Gaming and I dont want extreme lag from nowhere.
 
is your wifi secured, if not, or if it is WEP, secure it with WPA2
 
And are you sure this is my problem?
 
You should look at the documentation that came with your router. You should have secured it and changed the routers default password. How do you know that your speeds are decreasing? What are you using to test?

Speakeasy speed test.. Knology speed test... Speedtest.net
 
I don't know exactly how on your specific router, but you can find some guides online, or in your manual
 
You should disconnect your router and hook the computer directly to the modem. Then run a speed test. This will tell you if it is the router, modem, or service. It is not unusual for a DSL modem to slow down the connection speed if it is experiencing a poor connection to the CO (Central Office at the phone company). The further you are from the CO the poorer your connection will be.

Well you will have to wait for a time when the other users aren't using the network and test a wired connection directly to the modem.
 
WEll its only after browsing for a while that it gets slow.. and immediatly after i restart it perfect for about a hour
 
Anyways the problem still isnt resolved.. Maybe this thread will get more attention tommorow :D
 
Maybe you are looking for some kind of magical response? I mean you know what you have to do right? Its not something a hack or registry entry is going to fix, right? I bought my first Linksys router in 1999 (?) when it was $199.99 and had DSL in 1999 (in addition to wiring networks for 15 years) so I'm pretty sure I would know how to troubleshoot this. Until you can troubleshoot this properly as I stated above you should read the manual and figure out how to properly set up your router. If you don't set it up securely you are open to anyone using your network which won't be fun when the FBI shows up at the door because someone was wirelessly downloading child porn using your connection.

To troubleshoot you have to work from one end to the other. It wouldn't make sense to start at the computer would it? First you would make sure that it is not your connection to the internet. Second you would make sure that it's not the router. Third you would make sure that it's not the computer (or a computer on the network).

I had a problem with my DSL loop years ago that was inducing noise into the line at the box on the street. I would have to power cycle my modem to regain speed. After a while of complaining the phone company came out and fixed it.

I'm not saying that the problem in your situation is the DSL service or Modem but that is where you have to start.

It could be your router (or its firmware) or a computer on your network. If you hook one computer directly to the modem and everything is fine for a while you would know it is the router.

It could be one of the computers on your network and you could eliminate each of them as a suspect by trying them individually when the other two are turned off.
