My stash of DVD+R DL disks is getting pretty slim and I need to buy some more; however, it sounds like Verbatim moved production and now their product has a high rate of producing coasters. What I need:
-At least 10 disks.
-Low cost per disk.
-Speed doesn't matter.
-I want a brand that is known for not producing coasters because these disks often are $2 a pop (very expensive coasters at that).
-A cake box or spindle would be preferable because I don't use jewel cases.

I was thinking this Verbatim spindle would work but I am skeptical if Verbatim has sorted their production issues:

Thanks in advance.

lol I remember being happy to catch a deal on regular cd's at $12 each :) funny how our perceptions change ...

I would be interested in finding out an answer as well. The last set of DL's I bought were Verbatim's as well, but had no issues with them, Would like to see what others recommend.

I just don't know if all those people talking trash about them are really talking trash or if they speak from experience. I have a the exact same product and only had one coaster out of 20. I purchased it before all these complaints started showing up. Now I don't know if I should go for it or find something else. Judging by the reviews on Newegg, it still sounds like Verbatim is the best.

I personally don't buy anything other than Verbatim, it's probably the best brand.

You can also try HP.

I've been using Memorex for years and can only remember having a few coasters out of probably hundreds of DVDs/CDs.

Same, but I have never EVER bought a DL disc. Ive always stuck with Memorex for my CD/DVD's but I hear their DL discs are a high coaster rate.

So, am I stuck with the Verbatim ones I linked? I mean, I just burned 6 DVD+R DL that come in the exact same packaging with no coasters but, supposedly they moved production. I wonder if these people moaning about them are using a bad/incompatible burner and just blaming their unrelated problems to the move?

For dual layer I wouldn't use anything other than Verbatim NOT made in India

Is there anyway to tell if the one I linked was made in India or Malaysia? I looked at the pics and I couldn't see it. I can't even find it on my existing spindle.

Edit: I used up the last of my disks so I'm going to have to buy very soon. Maybe I should just get them, see if I can identify where their from, and keep track of how many fail.

Taiyo Yuden is another brand to consider. In all the major AV and recording forums, it ranks above Verbatim.

Where can I buy those from?

Edit: Um, I'm finding DVD-R disks but no double layer disks from them.

Well crap. I can't find them anywhere anymore either. I had a couple spindles here at one time, but I don't remember where I bought them. Out of the 40 I had, I had 0 coasters tho.

We sell them at our shop. Not one fukin coaster since I've switched to them and I'm on my 4th spindle of 100 in a year.

I get all my Taiyo Yudens and printer ink from supermediastore.com, the best prices I've found and great customer service.

Taiyo Yuden doesn't make what I need though (8.5 GB capacity). :S

That sucks, have a look around on that site, they have pretty good guides and let you know what is dependable media.

I have zero problems with my memorex +r dls on my pioneer burner. I can get them for $19.95 for a spindle of 15 at walmart!

If you have a Sams Club membership, they sell a 50pk of the Verbatim DL for $60. They are rated at 2.4x, but you can burn them up to 6x. Only thing you need to watch for is the country of production. They have Malaysia and India mixed together.

Unfortunately, TY doesn't make DL media. Otherwise I would recommend them.

Yeah, upon further research, it seems their DL media is discontinued. That sucks.

In that case, I would just grab the Verbatims. If you end up with a batch of India, just burn them all at slow speeds.

Whatever you do, don't get Memorex. The last spool of memorex I bought, didn't even have the full 8.5GB capacity. :shadedshu

Hmm, so my 8x memorex dls won't hold a full 8.5? Haven't actually filled one yet, guess I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, I got 5 coasters in a row once. I used the info tool in Nero, and it reported all of the blanks to have only 7.x GB available. (2 of them were even only 6.x GB) I know it wasn't just it reading a GB as 1024MB, because all of my Verbatim media read the full 8.5GB using the same prog.

I'm almost convinced to get the Verbatim but where is the "Made in" label at on them? I can't ever find it. :S

Yea Verbatim are the best...i burn up about 50 a month and dont have but 1 coaster...sometimes 0. Mine say made in Taiwan...under the bar code

I was gonnna suggest Taiyo Yudens, but they as was said dont make DLs. They make the best DVD Xs though. I have a 30 pack of Sony DVD +R DL that I Got from GE plastics last year, and havent had a coaster yet. My boss man gave them to me and they work well. Id say those or Verbatim. I think HP and Philips makes DLs as well and I hear they are decent.

my 100 pack of Dvds I got from Sams are Verbatims and they are made in Taiwan.

Oh, who makes the Armor X ones or whatever? Those are good too.

Made in is usually on the backside of the label where they have their logo. Hope that helps you.
