[EDP OTHER CONSTANT YELLOW ON IDLE] Sometimes turns red if doing random things like scrolling or opening light programs like notepad

Hi Everyone,

FYI: I am only using Throttlestop as an information hub just to see how my laptop is performing, meaning I do not use its features to undervolt or set limits (plus my CPU is locked so can't undervolt)

I have a MSI GP76 Vector Gaming Laptop (i7-12700H + RTX 3080). I have noticed that on my Limit Reason Window (see attached "LIMIT REASON WINDOW.jpg"), I always see the "EDP OTHER" yellow warning. When I clear this window, this warning goes back immediately within 1-2 seconds and am not doing anything, I was on idle. Another thing I noticed is that whenever I try to do something light, it goes on red for a split second such as opening a notepad, chrome, scrolling the web, scrolling the notepad etc.

Please note that I have tried to reset my laptop (Windows 11) and I still see this constant EDP OTHER yellow warning on idle.

I have read some forum thread and seen some answers from people such as @unclewebb. Majority have mentioned that this yellow warning is normal on some laptops however I am still concerned if my machine has any issues. I have posted some screenshots and logs of me playing a game for about 15 minutes if that helps.

I guess I wanted to know if this warning is normal or if I should be worried?

Can you post a screenshot of the FIVR window? IccMax might have been set kind of low by the manufacturer.

You can try setting Power Limit 4 in the TPL window to 0 to disable that power limit. Other than that, with 12th Gen H being locked down by Intel, there is not much else you can do.

Try checking the MMIO Lock box in the TPL window if you want to disable the MMIO PL1 77W power limit that your BIOS has set. This might be the cause of some of the PL1 power limit throttling that is showing up in the log file.

Overall the CPU looks like it is running great. The GPU might be power limit throttling. Run GPU-Z and see what it reports. Many laptops are power limiting the Nvidia GPU. This prevents the GPU from running at its full rated speed or at a consistent speed.

In the Options window, if the PROCHOT Offset value does not show a lock icon near this setting, I would use the ThrottleStop feature to Lock PROCHOT Offset just to make sure it is not being randomly changed by any MSI software.

@unclewebb - Thanks for the swift reply.

- Yes I will try this but wanted to confirm with other points first with you (See below)

Try checking the MMIO Lock box in the TPL window if you want to disable the MMIO PL1 77W power limit that your BIOS has set. This might be the cause of some of the PL1 power limit throttling that is showing up in the log file.
- I noticed that the MMIO changes its limits depending on what I am doing. At the time of the screenshot, which I am on idle, it is now showing PL1 110W. From my experience, if load is high against CPU, the wattage lowers as you see in the first TPL attachment on my post. But if I am on idle, it increases, see now attached updated TPL Window screenshot "TPL WINDOW 2.jpg".

Overall the CPU looks like it is running great. The GPU might be power limit throttling. Run GPU-Z and see what it reports. Many laptops are power limiting the Nvidia GPU. This prevents the GPU from running at its full rated speed or at a consistent speed.
- Thanks for looking into it. I believe (based on my very inexperienced technical mind, please bear with me) that the GPU is running okay as I was playing Spider-Man Remastered. I have researched that the game is more CPU hungry rather than GPU. I've checked also on my NVIDIA control panel that the maximum allowed power is 175W, which I believe is the highest for the 3080, but will still follow your suggestion.

I guess before I change anything as you said (Power Limit 4 in the TPL window to 0 to disable that power limit), could confirm if the change on MMIO has any effect to the yellow EDP warning?

@unclewebb - Apologies, I have forgotten to respond on your last point:

In the Options window, if the PROCHOT Offset value does not show a lock icon near this setting, I would use the ThrottleStop feature to Lock PROCHOT Offset just to make sure it is not being randomly changed by any MSI software.
- Please find attached screenshot "OPTIONS WINDOW.jpg". I can confirm that the PROCHOT Offset value does not have a lock and is by default unchecked. I can also confirm that the Lock PROCHOT Offset is also locked by default and is greyed out, can't do any changes.

Let me know if you need more information.

Checking MMIO Lock will prevent this power limit from changing. Give it a try. Intel CPUs do not need to have the turbo power limits constantly varying.

EDP OTHER throttling is not well documented in the Intel publicly available documentation that I have access to. The OTHER part is not explained at all.

I doubt there is any way to track down exactly what is causing this and even if you could figure it out, Intel has locked and disabled most of the adjustments in the FIVR window so you cannot do anything to solve this problem. You might as well just forget about it. If the adjustments I have recommended make any difference, great, but realistically, they probably will not solve EDP OTHER sometimes lighting up under the RING column of Limit Reasons.

PROCHOT Offset is locked by the BIOS so no need to give this setting a second thought. It is good that it is locked.

Modern laptops are not that enthusiast friendly. Intel and Microsoft want to give us an Apple like experience where we get to use our laptops but tweaking them in any meaningful way is frowned upon.

@unclewebb - Thank you again for your response.

Thanks for your input, I was actually leaning towards to just forget about the EDP OTHER and move on if its really just something that the CPU (or BIOS) does. So long as I don't experience any performance issues (which so far I haven't, been playing games with temp & power stats using afterburner).

I want to let you know that I am already satisfied that you have taken a look at my logs and based on your experience, the CPU appears to be performing great.

Again I appreciate you looking into this for me, you have a great day and holidays mate.
