'error' directory or file cannot be created??

please please someone help me before i put my foot thru the computer, i want to wipe my pc completely, and have transferred any photos and the like to cd-r and usb key pen( is this the same as aflash pen?????). ihave one set of photos and videos which takes up 1gb of space but the cd-r doesnt hold that much, when i try to put it on a key pen, al i keep seeing is 'error' ' directory or file cannot be created,:banghead::banghead::banghead:. is there somrthing im missing here or am i just stupid( dont answer that)
 
You may have to format the USB flash drive if it's the first time you've used it.

A USB flash drive is generally called "Thumb Drive". Some call it a "Pen" or "Key" since they can be put on keychains.
 
any number of things could be wrong with the pen, the drivers, or the os itself.

a "flash drive" , is the same as a thumb drive, thumb stick, usb stick, usb pen, flash pen, etc

can you not just burn 2 cds? if that was working fine before keep doing it. as for the pen, are you sure there is the room available on it? make sure free space is over 1gb. even if the cards capacity can hold it maybe something hasn't been erased.

try formatting the usb drive, but be careful. and note you will lose whatever is on it. if you still have the rest of your stuff on it, don't do it. and that probably could be where the space is an issue.

i would just burn 2 cds at this point.
 
digibucc is right on the money with this -if it's a bunch of smaller files, there should be no problem in creating 2 CDs. Permitted there isn't anything too valuable or important on the flash drive, formatting it will quickly lead to your knowing if it's any good or not. Anyway, flash drives are really cheap now. I'm sure a 2-4 gig one only costs a few dollars now so investing in a new one wouldn't be the end of the world if it ended up being bad...
 
this is a new one!!! there is 1 n a half gig free on it but no joy, i will do the two cd thing, but it is just in my nature to want to know why a certain thing works for some of my photos yet not for others, this inconsistency on a pc seems to be all too frequent for my liking, and , as a frustrated 45 year old, am still considering puting my foot thru it
 
Some flash drives have a read-only switch, like this one:

Make sure that you find yours (if it has one), because it's the only thing I can think of that blocks you from writing onto a usb drive.

oh i understand... the need to, understand ;) it's what keeps me so interested in this stuff...

i didn't mean don't try and figure it out, but from a simplistic solution point of view, cds get it done. :) good luck...
