Ethernet doesn't have a valid ip configuration

I left my pc on whilst I was doing other stuff came back half an hour later to find my Internet wasn't working and window's tells me my ethernet adaptor doesn't have a valid ip configuration, I'm connected to the modem directly through gigabit ethernet and have never had this issue before, I've reset and disabled the adaptor then renabled it again, switched ports on the modem, let windows troubleshoot and still can't get it to work

If you remember your old IP address or know the router DHCP configuration you can manually set an IP and see if there is an issue with routers setup.


In example.

192.268.0.1 Primary gateway
192.168.0.2 IP of PC

Tried entering the details manually but still isn't working, is there anyway to delete /refresh all my ethernet adaptor /networking settings in Windows

I'd do a reset on the router it may have been updated whilst you were not looking by your ISP (if it's an ISP provided Modem/Router) if not then do a factory reset on whatever modem/router you do have

Done that, still not working, how the fuck does it go from working perfectly for years to this, everything else connected is working fine, it was working fine until I stepped away for half an hour and now its not

While this wont answer the question, do you have a wireless nic available to test windows networking? Or another router (not connected to existing network) to see if the DHCP is somehow screwy?

All other devices are working fine, I do have a WiFi card I can use and I know that will work as its been working on an upstairs pc since all this happened, it just doesn't make any sense that it stopped working out of the blue

the network cable or card may have outright failed

test another device with the same cable to the same port, if they work then uninstall and reinstall the ethernet driver on the problematic system. If that don't help, replace the ethernet adaptor.

people always forget that the concept of a device being broken, is that it once worked. Just because it lasted for years doesn't mean it cant die after years of constant use...

Haha can't even install the WiFi card as I only have one pcie-1 slot and it's covered by my GPU FML I am now using tethering on my mobile which I should have remembered about before taking out my sons WiFi card (he has powerline ethernet anyway)

I know unexpected failures can happen, I don't think it's that though TBH as I have had the same thing happen to my son's computers, both Windows and both connected via powerline ethernet and I always put it down to that, it never happened on my machine once before now, TBH my ISP (vodafone) is a POS and I have been meaning to get rid of them for a year now but just stuck with them to save the hassle of switching, constant connection drops, modem resets etc at the worst point it was up to 10 times a day, I only haven't changed because now it's barely a couple of times a week and it's usually just a random reset and it will be back up and running without any intervention from me, though I think this is finally the straw that broke the camels back, time to look for a new ISP.

I'm just wondering, is the IP something like 169.192 or something daft?? Is the ethernet port lit up and the green and orange/amber lights flashing away at all? Another one would be, does another PC connected to the same cable work ok, which I mean, does that get a correct/proper address?

192.168.1.1 is the modem gateway, I believe the ethernet port has an orange/red solid light and a blinking orange light from what I can see, I can't really test another PC on the same ccable as this PC is downstairs and connected directly to the modem and the only other PC's I have are upstairs and connected via powerline adaptors

Sorry I meant are you getting that address on the PC that doesn't work or are you not getting anything at all? Notwork issues, amaze me... Can't ever figure them out so well when VLANs and a tunnels and whatever else is mentioned That said I'm still learning but more so, do you have a PCIe network card at all you could throw in?? I would say PCI card as they are as common as muck, the only problem with that is, most of the motherboards about today have only PCIe slots which is about as much use as a wet paper bag!!

When you log in to your router, what is the address that it's giving your machine? Providing you use DHCP and not set the IPs yourself as static etc...

@phill he's already said he does have PCIe wifi nic but the single PCIe x1 slot is covered by his GPU his mobo only has 1 x16 and 1 x1 PCIe slots so he's screwed for testing that machine any other way

do any of your friends have a laptop they could use or could you not just lug one of the upstairs PC's down and plug it in as it's starting to sound more like the onboard realtek 8111H NIC itself has gone poo which isn't really a surprise

Sorry didn't get notifications for the previous replies, I turned the PC on the next day and the ethernet adaptor/internet was working fine on the same cable/port etc I am putting it down to the ISP (vodafone) as the whole of the internet took a massive dump later that night (multiple dropped vdsl connections, 1MBps/0.5MBps D/U speeds upon reconnection, 30 minutes downtime etc) so it doesn't explain why out of 3 LAN connected devices my computer got singled out but as I said I think it's down to my ISP and I thought I had got over most of their major incompetence though seems like it's back with a vengeance so I'm on the look out for another
