STOP TRIPLE POSTING!!! not complicated to see what a double post or triple post is : it when you make 2 or 3 post in a row!!!

can a mods lock that thread at last ... nothing constructive and 970/980 are still kept in check by the 290/290X for those (like me) who don't care about watts

I agree. I think the OP does know what double and triple posting is. I find it hard to believe that the OP has had an account here for 3 years and doesn't know what that is.

In terms of generation, it is not fair to compare the 290 vs 970, as they are technically a generation apart. The 290/290x were to counter the GK110 (GTX 780/Ti) and they did.

To keep perspective, Kepler in GK104 and GK110 format had fought two AMD generations, Tahiti AND Hawaii.

So, it's quite reasonable to compare Hawaii to Maxwell. Same process node after all.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
I know, but stock performance of a 290X is closer to a GTX 970.
As I said above, I'm going off the 290X as it is closer to the performance of a GTX 970. A 290 is slower again.
For retail prices (excluding rebates/deals), in the regions I previously mentioned, they don't compete. With the 290X (which, again, is closer to the GTX 970 in performance) you have a card that is hotter, uses more power, is noisier and more expensive. Looking at secondhand prices (they're not much better than retail here), it may be a better buy.
In terms of generation, it is not fair to compare the 290 vs 970, as they are technically a generation apart. The 290/290x were to counter the GK110 (GTX 780/Ti) and they did. While many arguments may still arise about power and temperature between the two, the AMDs had price on their side. To be fair to Nvidia though, the GK110 was quite an old GPU by the time AMD replied.
then we agree ... you agree to my point and i agree to agree on the agreement of the price difference  in the end: they still compete, varying from place to place and my point was proven valid (on a case per case basis ofc)

To keep perspective, Kepler in GK104 and GK110 format had fought two AMD generations, Tahiti AND Hawaii.

So, it's quite reasonable to compare Hawaii to Maxwell. Same process node after all.
totally. it would not be fair ... (only)if the performance gap was way more than 10-25%

Well yes, but I was speaking more so along the SKU side of things. GK110 was primarily launched to counter the Tahiti XT2 as the GK104 was beginning to lose out (fair enough for a mid-tier GPU). AMDs response to the GK110 was the Hawaii, hence why I was stopping the comparison here. But then again, same node as you said , and the GM204 is pretty much a counter to the Hawaii. I mean, what better way to counter the Hawaii than to release a mid-tier GPU that is faster and is cheaper to produce? Enjoy larger profit (high SKU markup vs selling top-tier GPU) and small gains in market share.

Yeah probably not ideal for AMD having to sell a bigger chip for equal or less than Nv's smaller one, but hey ho such is life. Replacing GK110 also saves Nv on costs too.

That is an interesting point. While Hawaii is only ~10% larger than GM204 when it comes die size, more silicon is more silicon, so you'd hope for AMD's sake that the 28nm has matured enough to support high yield and thus cutting cost of manufacturing, meaning they can still maintain some profit even in the face of stiff competition. Perhaps this is the reason Nvidia released the GM204 on the 28nm node. AMDs undercut with Hawaii forced NVIDIA to find a solution quickly or risk losing revenue by waiting for 20nm. NVIDIA may simply not have been able to afford to drop the GK110 SKUs down to the Hawaii SKU prices with the die being ~28% larger than the Hawaii. Even on the maturing 28nm, production/yield may not allow such price reductions.

Or perhaps GM204 was going to be either 28nm or 20nm, but ended up on the former as Apple has first priority on the latter.

Concur the OP is going against the rules against double and triple posting multiple times.

Wonder why mods are taking so long to lock this thread, they must be having a jolly good time watching fanbois duke it out and running in circles I guess...

GTX 670 and GTX 770 were released at $400. No one is going to take you seriously when you back up your opinion with errors.

Sure, officially the GTX670 was released at an MSRP of $399, but I couldn't find a single one under $420 for several months.

I'm not double or triple posting. Get an online dictionary. I'm replying to different people saying different things. A double post is replying twice in a row with the same or substantively the same answer. I'm not doing that.

This is double posting according to TPU. Sadly I do not have the powers to moderate this thread....
Another mod will be along shortly.
