Fallout 76 is Online-only, No Full Single-player Experience

I could have fun with this with friends as a PvE thing, IF we could host a private server (with bases/characters transferring between servers, sounds like dedicated servers wouldnt be needed)

we wouldnt want a bunch of randoms coming in, absolutely hate dealing with random trolls, griefers and idiots in online games

I can see the appeal of a multiplayer Fallout. Fallout could be fun with a giant map playing with your friends exploring the wastelands. The keyword there is "friends" I dont want to play with randoms. Give us the ability to host a dedicated multiplayer server, and maybe the idea would work. But a tower defense MMO? That screams 'mobile phone game'.

I predict this will make a lot of money, but it will flop int he fact that longtime fans loose faith in the franchise, and future proper fallouts will fail to sell well, resulting in the eventual death of the franchise if it isnt relegated to mobile phone/flash games. Just like many current lootbox/micro-transaction laden garbage released this generation.

Yeah actually I agree - if they just made it semi-MMO like GTA and RDR games it might be fun. I want to be around FRIENDS most of the time, and I only want to be able to run into other real people OCCASIONALLY.

I will completely skip this if it tries to shove constant "multiplayer interactions" down my throat. This is one of the few games left where I play it to just be alone!

I would usually be angrier, but I'm hoping that Bethesda is using this as a learning experience.

ESO directly competed with the likes of WOW, and bombed.
Skyrim was a mediocre game (vanilla), but found a much extended life due to the modding community.
Fallout 4 is depressingly a pool miles wide and millimeters deep. It requires mods to fix some of the more horrible elements.

Fallout 76 is going to be Fallout 4 without the mod potential, with more base building, and requiring an internet connection.

Based upon the above, 76 will be a financial success which rapidly evaporates like mucus on a searing cement patch in the summer. Bethesda will decide to release Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 with the first truly new engine, baking in official mod support and no open system, and it will result in the experiment finally failing spectacularly enough to bring back something that I can get behind.

At the rate of release, that equates to around 2025 being the rebirth of Fallout/Elder Scrolls. I can honestly say I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Bethesda is lumbering slowly towards EA levels of bass-ackwards with its flagship titles. Given exactly how broken the games always are it seems insane to think that they'll suddenly release the next game clean, especially if they're keeping the same development team. Cutting off community mods by slaving the game to being always online is going to be fun to watch. The kind of fun you experience while watching a car wreck in NASCAR, or perhaps a train wreck.

Consider me not spending money on this game.

"Play solo or band together as you explore, quest, build and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats. " Literally from their website. Also he said you could play by yourself. OP were we watching the same conference?

This game will be fine. It will sell millions.

Did you watch Bethesda's e3 conference? He specifically said that yes it will be multiplayer, but single player is still there for the die hard fans. You get to choose what you want. Single or Multiplayer. Where are you getting your info from OP?

No, he said you can play the game solo. But it's an online only game. That may be what you're referring to; but it's certainly not a single player game in the style of all the other Fallouts.

"play solo.... online only"

you can only play on online servers, with other humans on them. The only variance is if you're working with or agains the other players.

One question - what happens with mods on this thing? I kinda doubt that it will be like, say, Total War series or stuff from Paradox, when the multiplayer will work if all players have the exact same mods.

Already posted this over in the official thread, but Todd Howard changed it today from you having to play on a Bethesda server to someday after launch you will be able to have your own private modifiable world.

https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-76-will-have-mod-support-but-not-at-launch/
"We love mods, and so we are 100 percent committed to doing that in 76 as well," Howard said. "We will not be able to do that at launch though. Our goal for launch—this is really new for us—is have a well-running, robust service, and then some period later, we're currently still designing what that service looks like, you'll be able to have your own private world and be able to mod it and do all of that.

"With our games, that's where the long-term life of them really is. That is trickier when you get into an online world, but we're definitely committed to that. It just won't be at launch."

Sounds like boring as f**k. Tower defense...pfff.
Guess the devs are getting more and more lazy and bored. Good luck with your sh*t. I guess there will be a lot of suckers to buy this...
Agreed. Waste. No offline single player? No money from me. And I vote with my wallet bit#$es!

Wow, this is not even multiplayer co-op? It's a competitive game where you blow up other people's bases for "loot"? Sounds like a horrible game. They just want to get in to the loot box business I guess.

Not in a million years. Making an online only game takes a lot of resources (servers, databases, datacentres, etc), not all Devs can afford that.

LOL? No thanks. God speed to you Bethseda.

Online only and mods probably only available via Creation Club....... not really interested atm. But maybe they will surprise us...

Yeah I was looking forward to a new Fallout game.
This game is not in any way Fallout it's a PUBG clone adding tower defense with a fallout shell, the fact that NPC's are out and it's PVP. ( Big nope. )
Other players on the map can see your location on the map - in what reality when I open a map where I live do I see every other person on the map, they are simply inviting others to start a conflict with you.

Fallout is meant to be played, single player, PVE, RPG offline - anything else is an attempt to either make money or just caving in to the lowest game play denominator PVPers and greifers.

Nup - Bathesda & Zenimax are done - I've boycotted anything that is remotely related to them until they make a Fallout game that is not a POC like this one.

You looking at the same game i am? Its PvE, and its hardly PUBG or fortnite with such a low player count, instant respawns, and various monsters around the map...

It's PVE with other players who can shoot you in the back for shits and giggles, because even if you are playing solo there will be other players on the map who can see where you are, it doesn't matter how big the map is greifers will cause greif.

I've always kinda wanted multiplayer in TES and Fallout, but not the MMO kind. This might be great, ok or really bad, lets wait for the beta and see.

My understanding was that the beta has been and gone Is this not the case? I did read something about those who ordered having early access to the beta.
When it comes down to it I don't do PVP, I played two games of battlefield one in conjunction with my flatmate to help him out - he brought me the full game to do it with all the add ons, bit of a waste of money on his part, I told him I didn't like PVP games and barring those two games I played with him I haven't touched it once.
No this game is PVP, if it had been PVE with online quests of which the quantity grew I would be into it but I'm not running around on a map no matter how big it is with a bunch of other people who can see where you are and come after you for the hell of it.
Bathesda f'd up and until they bring out another stand alone fallout game i'm boycotting anything they produce, I was looking forward to a new fallout and they brought out this POC.

the beta is for pre-orders only, and has not started yet

With a map 4x the size of FO4 it would be nice to have a vehicle or horse.

Well another day, and another game from developers who are lazy to make a story lines. The news is they are leaving the single player for fallout 5. Looks like this is money maker in between, but I am generally tired of developers being lazy and not willing to engage the story line. I think next gen Console gaming will be where its at, might have to grab one to play exclusives to actually enjoy some story lines. PC gaming seems to be heading 50-50 towards online only vs single player.

FO76 sounds typical of creative imagination starved devs these days. Perhaps spending more time being "bored" could result in more creativity... not less! Ironic as that may seem.
