So as I mentioned in the "What are you playing?" thread the other day, I have a backlog of games I started but never finished, New Vegas being one of them. I decided I'd reinstall it yesterday and pick up where I left off. Unfortunately, my PC BSODs with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop code either while loading to the main menu, or within a minute after loading my saved game. I don't recall having this issue before, but I do remember having to jump through a fair amount of hoops to get Fallout 3 to work.

Initial (unsuccessful) troubleshooting steps I took last night:
- All Windows updates are installed (I believe I'm on Windows 10 2004 but will have to double check when I get home in a few hours).
- 5700 XT drivers are up to date.
- Removed my CPU and memory OC
- Enabled compatibility mode for Fallout NV launcher
- Steam is up to date

I'm thinking that I just didn't enable compatibility mode properly. I believe compatibility mode was what allowed me to finally get Fallout 3 running, and I was troubleshooting New Vegas at around 1:30 AM with a couple IPAs in me so it's likely I didn't enable it properly. I recall running some compatibility troubleshooter and I got a UAC pop-up after launching the game through Steam so I might've just hastily assumed I did so correctly. Any insight that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. It is worth noting that my system specs are up to date. New Vegas is installed on the WD Blue 3D SSD.

Those were the steps I was following. Must not have gotten to deleting the INI files or verifying game files through steam. Will try both of those when I get home as well. Thanks, I don't think I would've gone back and checked that page if you hadn't shared it

Deleting the INI files and then verifying game files through steam (1 file was missing and needed to be reacquired) did it. Thanks for the help :toast:

How did that file end up missing milewski1015?

I have no idea. After taking a break from NV when I first got into it, I ended up uninstalling it via Steam. Then I reinstalled it through steam the other day when I wanted to get back into it. Only thing I can think of is that the steam verification was notifying me of the INI files I manually deleted.

Oh I see. You know, they praise the GOG version of Fallout NV. They already have the proper INI edits and some tweaks from them. For a good vanilla run experience, all you have then to do is Install a mod manager then get:

1-Yukichigai Unofficial Patch - YUP The very serious unofficial patch. It only and only focuses in fixing bugs and game progress breaking bugs. It doesn't try to add anything extra or change game experience. Very mods friendly.
2-NVSE It doesn't matter that you have mods or not. The plugin helps stablizing the game.
3-JIP LN NVSE Plugin Completes NVSE.
4-Ogg Vorbis Libraries (modern). Those are DLL files and are meant to replace the old ancient ogg files in the game that was made/compiled for Windows XP! I think Fallout 3 also have them. Not sure about Skyrim. People reported it fixed the stutter they have! Just unpack and extract them to the game files and overwrite the older ones. Backup the older ones first, just in case.

You're saying I can do all that with the steam version or I need the GOG version?

You don't need the GOG version :)
Here is a simple and light mod manager and will do just fine:
Nexus Mod Manager

Nexus was coding it then they abandoned it in favor of their new mod manager "Vortex". Then the community have obtained the source code and fixed it.
You can also skip JIP LN NVSE Plugin if you want. So it is only 2 mods and Ogg files.

I did the whole mod thing with the steam version. Be sure to backup the whole game just in case it messes up.

IRQL not less or equal is strictly bind to IMC voltage, memory voltage, instability.

You have anything undervolted, I sometimes get that message when my laptop processor is undervolted.

In my experience hardware is the most common cause sure, but definitely not strictly. FUBARd enough software and Windows especially can throw up all sorts of weird errors.

Yep, that's what my research showed, and was why I made sure to try disabling all OC and running everything stock.

5700 XT might have been undervolted but made sure to set that to auto when I removed my CPU and memory OC.

Yep, thinking it was a software thing since deleting the INI files and verifying game files via steam seems to have solved it. Buggy Bethesda software, who woulda thunk it?
