A group of about 70 fans are trying to put together what many see as the Holy Grail of the Half Life series, using Unreal Engine 4.
Known as Project Borealis, they also have a performance test which you can download and keep up to date using itch.io. Of course, like all things HL3 related, it's anybody's guess if it will see the light of day, but I wish them the best of luck.
I ran the performance test, just to send the results to them, if it helps in the development of the game. The site hasn't been updated in a while, but the performance test was updated a couple of months ago, so I assume they're still on the case, so to speak.

I couldn't find this in a search, so if it's been posted before, my apologies.

If i remember correctly.... Some years ago some fans were messing with the idea of trying to get a fan made HD remake of HL2 off the ground but got shut down by Valve/Gaben part way through.

This will probably suffer the same fate

I wonder is Valve would be so concerned these days though given their game development hibernation?

This project looks exciting. I would love to see some form of closure to HL, even if it is fan-made.

It doesnt matter how long they hibernate for, it matters that you have made use of their IP. Their IP is their IP no matter how long they have been sleeping for.

It might not of been a remake I was thinking of but a fan made HL3 or 'side story' as continuation from HL2 -- still fan made though. I think its something that has happend within the last 2year.

Very true.

I did find a story from back in 2012 where someone suggested tongue-in-cheek a game called Half Life 3 on Greenlight which Valve promptly shut down:

This was something else... It could of even been a portal remake - sorry if my information isn't complete clear but I have remembered valve shutting a fan project down when he was half way through making it. Maybe it was a HL1 HD remake

The ultimate insult to Valve: your engine is too crappy for fans to use to make a fan sequel they refuse to make.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Or maybe it's just...

old

Valve still updates it for DOTA2! :P

They pushed most of the engine changes to csgo and anyone can use the Dota tools for other projects but gl getting licensed :/

So if you're not doing an HL remake or mod using Source, Valve will shut you down?
This probably explains why Black Mesa was received so warmly by Valve.
On the other hand, if you create a game with a completely different name such as Project Borealis (or Project Lambda, which isn't really a game as such), yet mimmicks the HL2 storyline, you're probably in IP lawyer grey area territory.

Edit
I've just come across Boreal Alyph, another fan project aiming to create something from Marc Laidlaw's Epistle 3 letter, but they are using an updated version of Source, so maybe they won't get shut down by Valve, who knows?
