Faulty APU? (HP laptop, A6-5200) - Disable Win10 driver updating

Well, fair enough. That's a good analogy.

I hope I can avoid win 10, I'm sticking with 7 as long as I can and gradually moving to Linux.

I was thinking about giving windows 8 a try with aero addon, for a new setup,
but if Nvidia really screwed up windows 8 drivers worse than they did windows 7 drivers,
then that may not be an option after all.

I would think that more advanced users would know what they are choosing, and if you want manual control
then don't choose windows 10 that takes your manual control away from you.
What's the point of sitting on windows 10 and ranting about it?

I'm choosing and configuring my system so that it would work for me, not for somebody else.
Isn't that what's supposed to be meant by "advanced users"?

I intend to avoid the windows 10 nannying for a long while.

And use what? Windows 7? Windows XP? Linux?

Well, half of the world are still using Windows 7, including people that rolled back from 10 because of application/driver/hardware incompatibilities.

If other options are worse than windows 10 for you then microsoft has done it's job and has developed a perfect drug addiction for you and they have you right where they want you.

There are also virtualisation scenarios possible if you want to digg into it, to isolate offending application-driver combinations.
You would have to setup two windows guests on a hypervisor with a vt-d which both 5820k and x99 from your system specs do support,
one windows 10 guest for daily/regular usage and one windows os/driver stale previous version combination and see if that solves your compatibility problem.

Dude, you absolutely do not know me. I've been probably one of rare people here who have been complaining over retarded Win10 updating and you have the nerve to call me a junky who would sniff everything Microsoft serves to me. Dude, seriously... The rant on my blog about Win10 is the most read and highest rated article on my blog. But I guess I'm Microsoft's bitch. Somehow...

Stop buying junk cheap products and expecting 20 years of support. It is funny to me you are loosing your shit over this the Atom of the same generation lacks a true windows 10 video driver as do some of the 1st and 2nd gen intel i series parts. This isn't something new this isn't something crazy this is a thing we call life. You made a poor product decision and then installed an OS that didn't even exist onto a platform never designed to support it.

You know my Supermicro H8DGi-F retails for $600+ still for just the board and doesn't have proper Windows 10 support? The chipset is roughly based off of the Dragon platform from 2009. I don't expect a 7 year old platform to have perfect implementation on something it was never designed for. Mind you an off the shelf system for that would be well into the $2k+ range. You would pay more in taxes than what your E450 based thing retailed for. How you think it should have driver support blows my mind.

You can't in Windows 10. If MS considers it essential, security related, or a required update it will install it without asking you. To my knowledge you can delay it, but not disable it.

Actually, on Mussels' Profile he keeps link to this TPU page which he keeps updated for the Windows Update Mini-tool.

The mini tool works like a charms. You can select which updates you want and even cut out all drivers.

Your best rant is about a feature you don't like, but you still let it be forced upon you. What does that make you?

And more importantly than whatever you are in this, what does Microsoft become in this?

You sort of do not consent to this, but you sort of do give consent to what Microsoft decides to do with your system.
Where is the part of your brain that makes up your mind whether you're sailing with it or jump off the boat?
You do not get your DX12 pleasure pills without failed driver withdrawals.
Where is the part of your brain that can see and understand it as a package deal and make decisions based on that information?

And understand, that if we go with the same, and label Microsoft as a drug dealer for the sake of analogy,
then understand that you were precisely set up and directed in to this situation.
You think you and your system are working for your benefit,
but now you and your system are also working for the benefit of Microsoft.

For the price of DX12 Microsoft is getting the dream of every antidepresant/painkiller/every-other-drug company
to put you on a regularly scheduled prescription to decide what it wants to do with your system and with your data,
and your data is a fairly good substitution of your identity.

Now tell me, what do I need to know about you to tell you this?

The part where not being silent eventually changes things. You protesting with using outdated old version of Windows or with Linux will change exactly NOTHING. That's how.

Really because they both have a fully functional driver for that hunk of shit you call a laptop. Guess the outdated windows matches the outdated laptop and I use that term loosely since most tablets have more power.

No they don't work, because playing 720p video on a GPU that used to play 4K easily is not what I'd call fucking functional. And yet you still call it "junk" because you somehow seem to know more about the device than I do.

Oh and btw, when I did install Windows 7, that shit never managed to download a SINGLE Windows update, it just kept hammering CPU at 100% for hours, not doing ANYTHING. So much for that... Well ladida...

The A6 APU above is not a hunk of old junk and yet it has the same stupid problems. Sense the pattern?

It plays 4K fine when you install windows 7 and the proper driver, I could care less if you can't figure out how to get updates to work.

The A6 above is probably nothing more than a glitch. I have pumped out dozens of that generation with the latest drivers from AMD without issue. The only pattern I see is you see an APU thread and bitch in it.

I consider Microsoft interference with windows 10 users' interface worse than bitcoin mining malware and I won't tolerate either.
At least I know I'm responsible for my system and whatever happens on it. I guess we'll have to wait and see when will that come back to bite me.
And whatever activity is going on on my system that I'm not happy about is a virus, regardless of what it's creator company is called.
And I don't see Microsoft giving the slightest bit of consideration to whatever that old thing called consent was,
given how closing the dialog box was treated as an "ok" for an os installation.

I guess the reason for general unhappiness of some users is because what those users want is the opposite of what Microsoft is going for.
And Microsoft is competing and losing in some areas against Apple and Google, so they will try to catch up.

I don't have any illusions about the size of Microsoft or my ability to talk some of my world view in to them and I don't see enough protest votes for them to matter.
I've been invested in the Microsoft party line and now I'm just another screwed-over user
like we all have been able to watch countless other users get screwed-over over the years.

In the mean time I'll try to stay away from windows 10 toxic mess while I consider what computing options will be available for me to choose from.

There have been numerous threads all over the internet about fresh windows 7 installation update issue.
You may have to work around harder if you want to achieve any progress with that.

Microsoft pretty much redesigned Start menu back to how it sort of was in Win7. How? People complained about it. But until I'm the only one complaining over ridiculous Windows Update design and the rest of you are defending it, NOTHING will change.

I actually have read the replies here and ... yes.

Anyway, the guy bought a new laptop (an Acer with ... an APU in it, AMD laptops are hard to come by but he manages to buy them). He's got money to buy almost anything in cash, and he's not a patient man so he gave me the old one. Haven't done anything with it, but with the latest GPU drivers it seems the problem was resolved. At the time anyway, I did try a different driver and it still acted up, so we'll see how it behaves now. It is actually a pretty nice computer. I am in deep need of cash, it should bring in at least a bit of money.

VM fucking Ware. It's up to company behind it to fix their shit, not Microsoft. Now, please do tell me how many privilege escalation vulnerabilities were there for graphics drivers

There have actually been a few, though on PC most are a distant memory.

On a more general market, Quadrooter on android was a Qualcomm GPU driver bug.
