which one would you consider the best file type for HTPC movies and tv shows?

best= quality of picture and audio

Mastrovka!!!!

(Mp4 would be a good idea if you are converting to iphone/pad/pod/xxx but for HTPC.. no thanky :)

i was thinking MKV as well Just thought I would get a couple more opinions on it first before it gets serious

AVI because it's pretty much a universal format, oh the pain I had go through to get MKV to work with Windows Media Player /cry

(But if you have it in another format DO NOT try to convert it to AVI, it can turn a 200MB anime file to a 9GB with same quality, tried it with School Rumble 2 MKV).

those "formats" you are talking about are just containers for different codecs

h264 for HD, xvid for below

thats kinda hard
i have all but since i do from mobile device most is mp4

IMO, dont convert the container or codec.....

if your ripping it from a disc just do a direct copy.

I like mkv so I can keep the different audio tracks together for say, jap/eng dubs on anime, or the director's commentary track.
