Back in October when the i9 9900K was about to be launched, I decided I wanted to upgrade my computer from my old i5 8600K to more of a beast machine not because I needed to, but because I wanted to and for WCG. With the points I had on my Amazon account, I was able to purchase and preorder an i9 9900K and an Asus Z390 Maximus XI Code motherboard and I must say, this motherboard is unlike any motherboard I have ever owned and it is going to be hard come upgrade time again (way down the line) to get anything other than a premium motherboard again. So that was the month of October.

Fast forward to the beginning of November, my Corsair h100i v2 bit the dust. Temps were 100*C at stock settings and sitting in the BIOS, temps climbed to over 70*C. So I purchased a new Corsair H150i Pro triple radiator.

A week later, my Asus STRIX 980 died. :banghead:

I tested my power supply to see if it was the culprit of it killing both a 980 and a temp GTX 680 card I had put into my computer, but the test with a PSU tester came back fine. So after talking with a buddy, we determined that there might be some sort of overvoltage that is killing the GPU's on the 12v rail when it becomes unstable under overclock conditions. So I replaced the PSU.

A week after that, I got laid off from work :banghead::banghead:

Fortunately, a very good friend of mine from here at TPU was kind enough to send me an EVGA 980TI SC until I could scrape together enough money to get a new video card. :respect:Im not really one for the used market so I prefer everything brand new. I dont want to call you out on here but you know who you are and I am very appreciative of it bro, thank you! :toast::respect::love:

Come Cyber Monday, Newegg and Amazon had a deal for my coveted Asus STRIX RTX 2080 for $819.99 with a free Battlefield 5 code. So naturally, I had to jump on it.

So everything in my computer is brand new save for the case fans, the case itself, and my 16GB of ram. I have been overclocking my system and I am please with the results. There still needs to be some fine tuning (hopefully the CPU voltage!), so I will see where I am at in the next day or so.

Below are the results of what I have thus far!

Ah, I remember the days where a sub 10s SuperPi was a great score...Enjoyed seeing that in there, probably not very common anymore.

Best of luck with the job search, and props to that generous friend of yours :toast:

Man it's been a while since I've been on here. Since when is Solaris a mod? :D

I also forgot to mention that the 5GHz OC on the CPU is 100% stable in Prime95 for 11hrs straight.

1. I pretty much follow the same thinking MoBo wise ... if it doesn't have that LCD for BIOS Fail codes, not interested. But I have also found that the $350 - $550 boards aren't giving me anything extra over the high $200s. We dropped Asus thru Z87/Z97 series as had too many problems, those seemed to have disappeared with Z170 tho.... what hasn't disappeared is the RoG tax, so always recommend looking at the Asus TUF line as well as Gigabyte / MSI (Specifically Titanium line) offerings. The code is a great MoBo, tho if money is tight next time around, could likely get all the features ya need for $100 less.

2. I don't have anything that benefits from 9900k over 9700k .... 98% of folks and 100% of gamers won't. Then again with the 9700k selling about $100 over what it should, it's not that huge a jump.

3. PSU tester is not really adequate for much other than seeing if power is coming out, but with all that $$ invested, a new PSU is a good idea especially in "long in the tooth".

4. We have been recommending the MSI 2080, it's has the best OC scores and highest power liming of those tested by TPU tho not by a lot ....Asus did have lower temps. Both are sound choices.

MSI Gaming X = 180.2 fps / 289 watts
Asus Strix = 175.0 / 253 watts

5. Today I don't see P95 as useful for much of anything .... the old version w/o AVX doesn't present potentially dangerous core voltages but it also doesn't show that your OC is stable under either today's modern instruction sets now a multitasking environment. Last time we used P95 fro testing was 2013 and the 24 hour stable P95 load failed not long into a 2 hour RoG Real Bench Multitasking test. Would recommend doing RoG Real Bench as a) better test for stability in multitasking envirionment and b) will usually allow a higher OC as temps will be as much as 10C lower allowing higher voltages.

See I actually had someone from this site thread crap a post of mine a year ago I made when I got the 8600K and was overclocking it that I wasnt using P95 and blah blah blah and after that everyone just stopped coming into my thread myself included. Ill see if I cant hunt it down and PM you it.
