Flashing MSI 1080 Gaming X with Gaming Z firmware

Hello,

Just curious if is possible, and if somebody already did this?
Flashing MSI 1080 Gaming X with Gaming Z firmware.
Currently running below freqs, which I found out there are the max stable, but I was wondering with the new Bios if I could go even higher, since it's also add a little extra voltage juice to the GPU.



Thoughts?

Have you seen screenshots somewhere that the gaming Z runs a max boost on higher voltage?

You can try it...should be no problem...i did it on my 1070(flashing the bios of a higher end model) and it works great...if anything goes bad you still have the bios switch...

I did explain i flashed the bios of a higher end model, exactly like the OP is trying to do...just that he has a 1080. There is really no rocket science behind this...the 1080 Gaming Z is not that different than the Gaming X.

You can try, but you will more than likely max out in the same place anyway. Voltage control is EXTREMELY limited and tends not to bring much more, if any, clock increases. I don't see a point, honestly. If you are stable using software, just use the software and a hotkey or have it start with windows.

do a back up always... sometimes Bios flashes might f*ck your day ...

I did the same with my card, all you have to do is tell NVFlash to ignore the different PCI subsystem ID by passing the -6 flag.

That said, I haven't noticed any further potential on my card after flashing a BIOS with higher power limits. Pascal's built-in limiters are extremely strict.

Which if you don't set it manually, is a good thing. If you overclock/manually set clocks, that isn't relevant.

These cards can barely hit their Power Limit. Out of the several I we have reviewed, I am not sure one actually hit the max power limit.

I disagree about that, my card before the flash actually hit the PT limit in Firestrike Ultra benchmark when overclocked with increased voltage., now with the new bios, it doesnt. Also the ram on the card overclocks way way better now...but that is mostly because of the bios fix for micron memory.(my memory now clocks higher than most of the samsung equiped ones)

old thread but resurrecting to say i did this mod (gaming X to gaming Z) in about a minute using the method/mod in the top post of this link

~90Mhz higher default and boost clocks, basically zero effort involved. No need to leave afterburner or anything else running either, which is nice.

Ill tell you right now that this is a pointless exercise because Pascal wont hold max voltage in any case unless you can stay below 60-65 C on load, which is impossible unless you put the card under water.

So unless you WC it or just want 20 points more in firestrike, dont even bother.

i just wanted to know saving that $250au price premium at time of purchase was the right call - and the top thread googling it was on TPU with no conclusion.

Well I think if you come from an Armor or lower segment 1080 there is some hidden perf to extract, but again, all that matters here is temps. The irony is that when you need most thr extra perf, you already have the hottest situation the card will run at.
