Folding@Home Project Comes to NVIDIA

well they cant show a graph like that without some kind of proof.

To all the people saying 'ATI is better at this stuff' oh really, you have a G200? these are a new card, it IS possible that they are better than ATI at folding.

Ok, to clear some things up about the graph.

1.) It is comparing the next gen nVidia cards to a 3870. I would hope the next generation of nVidia cards would be twice as powerful as current gen ATi cards.

2.) Yes, the next generation of GPUs will most likely be able to beat a PS3 at folding. The Cell processor is strong, but won't be king forever. The theoretical output of the PS3, which is what is shown on the F@H site, is way off from the actual. The fact is that the PS3 is barely doing more work than a set of 3870's.

3.) GPU folding is much faster than CPU folding, which is why the CPU bar is so low. GPUs are far more powerful at folding than CPUs, however they are very limitted in what they can process, while CPUs can process virtually anything. It is sort of like a train vs. a car, the train being GPUs and the car being CPUs. The train can go from point a to point b very quickly, but it has to stay on the tracks. The car gets from point a to point b slower than the train, but it can go to point c also which is miles away from any train tracks.

hmm but you dont see nvidia trying to shoot down ati's claims of over 1 tflops.. and im sure they'd let people know about that if they could achieve that with their newer cards, and not let ati have all of the glory for the time being..

in short: i dont think nvidia will be reaching 1 tflops, and btw the new ati cards have unlinked shaders, allowing you to clock up the shaders

Why would they try to shoot it down, it is probably true, so why bother with trying to disprove it? nVidia's performance speaks for itself, it doesn't have to rely on paper specs to make their cards look good. And isn't this article letting people know about what the cards can do? Double the performance of a 3870 puts the next generation of nVidia cards at just about 1 TFLOP.

I know ATi's shaders are unlinked, but they are still clocked realatively low. The 4870's shaders are only going to be clocked at 1GHz, while nVidia's will most likely be 2GHz.

is it possible to f@h with your cpu cause i really want to help fight cancer, and where can i download the client?

YES f@h was orginally for cpu x86 and has expanded to gpu and ps3 just download the client. FInally i can use my two sli rigs and extra right with 7900gtx to fold i hope or at least witht he new gen 8800 series

thanks im running it now my proc is really slow but every bit helps(i think) and how can i get that pic of f@h in my sig

i too am interested in that sig pic. my 8800GT will probably start folding soon, so it'll be worth be joining in.

After ATI joined the F@H team almost a year ago, the time for NVIDIA to follow up has finally come. There will be a Folding@Home NVIDIA GPU client out soon, the company confirmed today. Mr. Vijay Pande, the man behind the Folding@Home project said. NVIDIA also showed the new NVIDIA GPU client running a live demo on "next generation GeForce graphics card". Head on over at PC Prospective to find out more on the story.

Great, a new stability test for my GPU :)

what happens when your GPU isn't stable and you try using it to fold? Also... when can we expect this to come out?

probally the same thing as when you game crash. I know if i try and oc with f@h it doesnt like it so much and unless i oc the 1950xt in my folding rig like mad i dont see a huge gain so i leave it stock as far as using it for a stability test i would think it would work fine for cards that aren't being overclocked but i do know because its not out yet

so when can we expect this?

the ps3 and 360 gpu's are either slower or bottle necked i see graphics lag on both consoles and game details are limited to allow for smoother play call of duty 4 doesnt look that good compared to playing it on the pc at full details and my pc with a Q6600 + 3870x2 +4 gig ram plays it a hell of a lot smoother.

Who knows, the green graph could be that of the GTX 280. Being 2.5x better than HD3870 with F@H sounds realistic for the GTX 280.

Also, the y axis is the number of mols it can work on per day. Im guessing mol is molecule? It really doesnt seem unrealistic. Remember that the 4870x2 is going up against the gtx 280 and that seems a much more even battle.

The reason the ps3 has such an immense output compared to gpus is because of their sheer number. GPUs are a lot better.

This is OUTSTANDING news!!!!

All i can say is its about flipping time Nvidia got a F@H client.

Now if only they would tell us what cards it will work on, it better work on 7xxx+ cards. Or else my GTX's will be going to waste :@

And I'm not sure if the F@H client for ATI supports multi-GPU, does it?

to my understanding it does.

Then it would be interesting to see 2x HD2900 XT.

i just realized a bit typo in the OP.
