I want to format this laptop, but I don't know how to do it properly. OS is Windows 7 64-bit, and apparently a lot of laptops no longer come with Windows cd's and you now need to make your own "system recovery disc." Except I don't know how to do this and would rather not just browse around Sony's website when it comes to doing something this important. Where should I start, and what other info do you need to answer this?

What sort of laptop is it?

It should have a partition (D: Drive) That says recovery or restore?

If it does boot into this ( look on there website to tell you what key to press) and you should get the option to do a factory restore? or recovery.

Sony VAIO.
A D: Drive appears in Computer folder, but I don't know if it can do anything.
I'm really annoyed with this, now I have to search around the site and see if they have anything.

Is there a sticker with a key on the back? Grab a disc with that version, enter the key, you're good to go. Windows 7 will most likely have 95% of the drivers you need.

does the D drive say anything? does it have a title? on sonys usually F12 starts the windows recovery. some models are F1 and some of the high end ones have a recovery button on them. at boot up does it say anything like Press "X" to start recovery? we need information please answer our questions as thoroughly as possible. is the D: drive just the CD drive? or is it classified as an HDD?

I don't know what this will tell you:

As far as the computer is concerned it's just a disc drive, apparently.

No, I don't have a Windows 7 disc, Sony doesn't give those with laptops anymore if they ever did. I have a product key but for all I know couldn't that just be to identify this specific laptop? Don't know where I'm going to get a Windows 7 disc either.

I haven't tried rebooting and hitting keys yet.

hmmm thats just a disk drive that model doesnt seem to have a recovery partition when i worked for GS we had systems like this often. call sony and give them the model number for the laptop. they might charge you like $40 but its cheaper then buying retail and they will send you recovery disks.
