GBit lan

well im using my normal lan conector 10/100 can i use my Gbit lan conector will it make a differance?...will it even work? and is it for something special?...ive always misunderstood this i was asking because windows says im not using it..and im not and it says 10/100/1000 and i was like hm would anything really change?

What are you connected too? You would only use a 1000 in a lan that was running a 1000 I believe. I got 10/100/1000 too, it only uses 10 where I use it for my broadband.

When you have 10/100/1000 you are limited to what your network will support. Say you have 5 computers on a network, if they are all using megabit ethernet than it doesn't help thay you have Gigabit. Also you need a hub/switch/router that is Gigabit compliant.

It's only the device on the other end of the cable that matters. You could use a crosslink between 2 gigabit cards. Or you could get a switch with 1 or more Gbit ports, speed will sync at the max speed of the slowest device in the path. If you create a 1000Mbit link you ould have effectively have 10× the bandwidth of 100Mbit, other devices will limit throughput though, think of harddrives or the PCI bus.

i c thanks everyone i understand though i already understood the whole it limits itself to the slowest one i was explaining this to my freind...."i have dsl why is it downloading @ like 28.8kb sec?" ...me well u can (i was breaking it down for him) only download as fast as the server can put out..u wont be downloading @ 512kb sec all the time.
