Not sure where to request support for this or if it's even possible. I'm mostly asking this because of the General Nonsense forum, the gif thread. With the advent gifv, most gifs are now coming in that format. Sure you can chop the v off and it still works, but it loads up much slower, and in a thread dedicated to gifs, scrolling through a page with numerous of those trying to load up, it's just a nightmare.

So if it's possible, it would be great to see support for the actual gifv format, rather than solely gif. Thanks!

Yes please. They also have much higher quality. Webm is also a format I'd love to see support for.

Bumping this in hopes of some more support. HTML5 is here, lets embrace it!

I use gif my self when quality is a none requirement, the gifv sounds like it could be a pain if your on about the forum support but a app that deals with them would be cool but isn't their apps out there to do that already ?.

Seconded
I have a giant folder of webms
They also have sound
That is not necessary a good thing Bandwidth and loading times ?

Lots of People have Download caps especially via Mobile connections

Webm's and gifv's are usually smaller than their gif counterparts. Also, you could add a play button to them so they don't play until you click them.

I see theres a small discussion. I just want to say the reason I made this post is because the Crazy GIF thread over on General Nonsense, most good GIFs these days are gifv, and sure you can chop off the v part, but an entire thread filled with those it just brings the page to a halt. That thread will cease to be soon simply because most good gifs these days are gifv.

take a gif add a sound file no way can the combined file be smaller than the original gif

Any of the gifv I have found that I would like to share with General Nonsense have no sound. So that would shoot down that. Not sure if they can come with sound, but you guys make it seem so. Either way, that doesn't mean they all do, I haven't found one that does yet, I just want to upload more gifs to GN, and with them all being gifv, it's not worth it, will just murder peoples browsers cutting the v off. But as I'm reading from here, you would be wrong about the file size anyways. Gifs an old format, when modernizing things lots can be done to optimize and get better performance yet more ability (thats just how tech works).

Gotcha, I have no idea about webms, I think I've seen a few. GIFV is the new format for gifs, came with HTML5. With it here now, you probably won't be seeing plain gifs anymore.

Webm autoplay is site controlled, you can do a lot with a 4mb webm so if thats too much data for you im sorry.

What i Said WAS

Personally i am NOT Capped

I was Thinking of OTHER PEOPLE that may be CAPPED

I don't think we need webm autoplay, but gifv's are always smaller than their gif counterparts, and a ton smoother/better. I would love it if TPU would auto-convert all gifs hosted by them to gifv.

I support the cause.

I was thinking about making a request for gifv/webm support, but searched first and came across this thread. There's a good number of gifs posted over in the WCG section and moving to gifv/webm would lighten the load considerably.

To show the difference we're talking about, here's an example of the same image/movie in both formats (pulled from imgur). Only difference is the format it's saved in.

You can see the difference for yourself here:

gifv/webm

I support the cause, the lighter filesizes should be a no-brainer.

not 100% on autoplay, but be nice to have them supported instead of just links.

I am 1000000000000000000000000000000000% against auto play of anything on this site. If I login to TPU and somebodys fucking ring tone or someshit starts playing thats a fantastic way to lose user base.

autoplay for audio, i'm against. auto play for gif/gifv... well if theres an option to click to start, i'm all for that for the bandwidth savings. the GIF thread in GN makes that abundantly clear how necessary that is.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. No need for sound on these (that's what YouTube is for). It'd just be very nice to keep bandwidth usage down in gif-heavy threads.

Also, gif and GIFV don't do audio (I'm pretty sure) only webm supports it by default. You can also have webm limited to only video, not audio on xenforo.

Autoplay is no different than this gif autoplaying here. Except instead of being 75MB it would be 1MB. Huge gif inside btw

Here's the webm, only 1MB

..not to mention smoother. I thought an i7 4790 and ~500Mbps on tap would handle it, but nawp.

I really agree about autoplaying. It's really no different than gifs, just less resource intensive.
