Minor Spoiler warning
The timeline moves around with each character. Basically the viewer is watching Yennefer events that have occurred decades prior to Ciri's events in the show and Geralts events start more then a decade prior. The storyline all merges towards the end but for someone coming into the series with no prior knowledge of the series I can see how viewers can easily be confused. They also fail to explain all the different kingdoms. The brilliance of the GoT opening sequence is you see a map and where each household is located.
Simply put my wife can get into GoT without reading any of the books. With the Witcher she was completely confused and I had to explain what was happening a lot. She lost interest quick.
