Hello all. I am a proud owner of an 1080ti for a few years now (like 3+ yrs) and i've noticed that the price of the GPU's it's starting to fall down, so i've eyeballing an ASUS TUF 6900XT OC gpu for a good price (like 830 USD), it's was put in mining from oct '21 till may (that's 7 mo). The card looks brand new, full box, even has 17 mo of warranty left.
So it's a good idea to grab this card for this price or should i wait a couple of months and get a newer generation card instead (like the RX 7000 gen or nVidia RTX 4000)

I'd say, wait if you can...

Prices of GPUs are really good right now but the next gen GPUs should be out in a few months. Of course they could get delayed or there might not be enough of them to go around. It's a gamble to wait but I think I would wait. The next gen GPUs are rumored to be considerably faster.

No to mined cards

Get a BNIB 6800XT

Buy now flip later :)

I bought mine last summer.. this thing is getting planted in the ground with me.

Looking forward to new cards with abundant supply :)

The last 2 years aside, which was an anomaly as far as GPU prices were concerned, there is usually not a bad time to actually upgrade your current performance, worst case scenario is new cards drop in a few months and maybe in 6 months what you paid would get you more performance either with new gen or higher spec last gen, always the way with technology, don't upgrade, wait the 6 months for more performance and stick with what you have now until then, gritting your teeth a bit longer. There's no right or wrong answer, do what you feel like doing, either wit or buy now, either way, in 6 months time there will always be something better....

Already updated system specs eh?

Get a 6800XT and overclock it. Buying mined cards is just a no no.

Mining cards if done right actually have had a better life than gaming GPU's that have been flashed and overclocked to death and ran to an inch of their lives, usually running at 40% lower power consumption, lower voltage, core clock and slightly tweaked vram profiles, not cycling from cold to hot many times, unfortunately not all mining cards have been used in this way and some will likely be trash though I'd rather buy a well looked after mining card than a dirty, dusty grubby GPU that has been ran balls to the wall for a few years by 14yo little Jimmy who hasn't got a clue

Hi,
Upgrading is better now than in the last two years I believe
But I wouldn't do a miner card or asus either.

I have heard that about the 40% load on the GPU but doesn't mining put a lot of stress on the VRAM?

If you buy now, you lose $500 in value $100 per month until november and you get a RTX 4070, RX 7700 alternative with +4/8GB more RAM and higher power, less ROP, RT capabilities and will have to stick with the said inconveniences for longer. But you also get to sell 1080Ti for a higher price, so what matters is the difference in price between 6900 and 1080Ti. If that doesn't bother you or you can jump on the next gen wagon at any loss do it now.

If you are planning a high end purchase, I would wait. New mid-range and budget cards probably won't be out till next year.

Now is the worst timing for a new graphics card. Better wait at least a couple of months, maybe performance leaks will appear and we will have a better idea about what's coming and what's not.
Maybe January-February will be the best time.
Depending on the AMD management and the mining market, the prices will begin to drop or it will again become unbearable with prices like 1500-2000 for cards launched at 649.

A law - never buy an old generation (year 2020) graphics card just before the launch of e new generation (year 2022-2023), unless there is a heavy discount.

I've ran the shit out of some cards for years, gaming, high temps and they still work to this day. High temps weren't just from a single card, I ran SLI for all my gaming builds until Maxwell series where a single 980Ti was enough for my needs.

Had a couple of GTX 280s that I ran in SLI for 3 years or so, my brother then used one of them for a couple of years. After I got it back it was caked in dust/dirt, cleaned it up, new TIM and no issues after 5+ years of use.

I still have a GTX 570 that I ran in SLI for 4.5 years (overclocked to the max they could run with max voltage they could sustain), temps constantly reached into the high 90s for the top card and high 80s to low 90s for the bottom card. Then my brother used it for a couple of years....card has around 7 years of gaming use and she still works. I popped it in my computer the other weekend just to screw around with it and see how it held up for gaming, she still works.

I keep the cards clean in general and I tend to replace the TIM and thermal pads (if needed) around the 4-5 year mark and do a thorough cleaning after pulling the card apart.

The problem you have with any used card (mined on or not) is how truthful the owner is about the use and condition of the card. Making a claim that a used mining card is better over a used gaming card (or vice versa) is just stupid. I have had brand new in box items fail on me (MB, RAM, HDD, DVD players and so on) throughout my life whereas I've had used hardware last years and years, even after being abused and dirty - my point is, electronics can fail at anytime, new or used.

Personally, I like to buy new. I know some people like to buy used. Just use your best judgement if you're going the used route.

But there is no guarantee of a mining card being taken care of. Gamers are at the keyboards, miners treat them like servers

You can get a brand new 6900XT for $899. 3 of them on newegg for that.

No newegg for me, i'm from Eastern Europe

Not anything an undervolted chip can't handle for probably decades.

Does Intel plan to have something in range 6700, 6800, 6900 ?

Latest info on Intel Cards do not look anymore that optimistic seems like their Best Card A780 it's going to perform slightly worse then RTX 3060 TI.......of course take all this info with a grain of salt....

P.S. For OP I believe it's a good time If you buying used cards when it comes to the new cards they also dropping in prices but not all and not as much.....

It's their drivers that worry me the most, Intel HD drivers are absolutely hideous and look like they were knocked up on the weekend by a drunken monkey, whereas AMD and Nvidia have years and years of improvements and optimisations, Intel GPU's could be pretty good though I think it will take several gens to get close to the other players to have a driver package that is as stable and feature rich as AMD and NV

Best as anyone can tell, card prices should be cheapest around september, but then the economy could be worse by then too so since prices are around expected prices right now you wouldn't be making a mistake by getting a card now.

Finally i've got a 6700xt for 360 USD from a miner in warranty 18 months left... So i will keep this card till the new generation on GPU will drop

LE - I've sold my old 1080ti for 310 USD
