I get this error saying; A Hook process was found, please delete your anti virus software and try again.

I have searched all over the net and nothing helps. I am running this on a clean copy of win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I have NOTHING installed except this game and I deleted all the HP stuff my compaq laptop came with. I just have win 7 and this game nothing else.

If anyone has gothic 2 and can test this to help me figure out how to run this I would appreciate it.

Isn't Gothic 2 like.. ancient?

It may be something to do with compability with your OS and even though its highly unlikely, its my best idea.

ya it came out in 02.. so if ur using vista or 7 i wouldnt b surprised if it didn't start.. try compatibility mode?

Yeah it's old but I picked it up recently cus I never played it before.. Loved Gothic 3..

Heck speaking of Old.. Wednesday I am getting the Redneck Rampage 3 game set for 6 bucks from GOC.com.. these games were made 1997-1999. ( it has a new patch for play on XP Vista and Win 7) Yeah.. Old.. but there is nothing else like them anywhere.

I still play Infocom Text games from over 20 years ago. Sometimes you gotta own some classics and stick to what works beck when they knew how to make games. :-)

Anyway, I am sure if this thread survives long enough someone who has the game will find a way to help. The compatible issue I don't think is the problem.. I have read about people with vista 64 that runs it well.

Gothic 2 wasn't exactly known for being bug free, I had hell getting it to run on XP. I am willing to bet that it's your OS.that is giving you the problem.

That's correct.. its not just a compatibility issue. I have read enough threads to know this. many people with win 7 64 have gotten it working. I do not know how they did it.

The problem seems to be not that its not compatible with the OS itself.. but that there is something in the OS that it is detecting.. a Hook. A Hook if you know anything about programming is a type of software activated action. Its something that tells something else what to do or how to behave.. in the simplest terms as I understand it.

That is not a sign in itself that the OS isn't compatible with the program. Only that there is a conflict someplace that needs to be found and worked around.

ShiBDiB, you also say you would not be surprised if it would not start because it is old.. made back in 02. Would it surprise you then that I have many older games from 97, through 2002 that do work just fine in windows 7 ?

The age of a game really does not come into play with these new systems because if there are conflicts you can be sure that someone someplace has found a way around them.

And yes, I have tried all the obvious things you learn in Windows 1st grade like changing the settings for compatibility mode to XP and running as admin and stuff like that.

so it is the os... just not "the os"

It could be as simple as a driver or a service or process running someplace. The problem with the Hook error message is it thinks I have an anti virus program installed. I do not.. not even windows defender is allowed to run on my systems.

Trouble shooting Hook conflicts manually can be a nightmare.

And yeah.. "so it is the os... just not "the os"" is a good way to put it I suppose. I could disable 3/4's of your Windows processes, services and drivers and you would never know. There are just too many things Windows runs or has set to run when needed that is hardly ever used by the common user - and your windows would run all of your games and apps just fine.

This is why I say it's not the OS itself..only something in the OS. I am sure the core components needed to run the game are all there and working properly.

no i get what ur saying, i'll do a little google diggin and see if i find anything

edit:

Conflict: a hook process was found

* You system may be infected with malware and/or viruses/trojans. Search your PC with an up-to-date anti-virus tool (like freeware Antivir and SpyBot, use both of them !)
* Universal Shield, -A2Guard, 0190 alerter, 0800 alerter, Spy sweeper, old versions of tiny personal firewall and other comparable software might cause this problem. Uninstall them, maybe only for testing.
* Also games using the StarForce copy protection may be responsible for that error. Try to uninstall SF completely.

from the official forums... check if any games uve installed use starforce

Yeah that's why I started over with a new install of Win 7 from the HP restore disks then removed all HP bloatware. That game is the only thing on that laptop so it could not be any of those above.

I've come across all those too.

Thanks for trying.

It's just gonna take me finding a win 7 user who was lucky enough to find the right combo of fix's that worked.

Are you trying to run the game from the retail CD? The hook error generally had to do with copy protection.
