GPU Fan Issues

Hello all, bit of a weird one here.

My GPU (2080TI) has been having one fan go berserk at seemingly random times, climbing from my set 2400 rpm to around 3350 rpm for no reason. So I installed HWMonitor to confirm this and GPU Tweak 3 to adjust fan speeds.

My GPU has two fans that show up as fan #0 and fan #1 in HWMonitor. When I pull them up in GPU Tweak 3, they show as Fan #1 and #2. I figured that this was just a difference in layouts of the programs, but when I set the speed for both fans in tweak, only the fan listed as #1 in HW and #1 in tweak responds to the controlled speed, while the one designated #0 in HW runs off at high speeds still.

Only adjusting #2 in tweak proved my guess, that the #0 fan is not recognized properly by tweak, correct. This post seems all over the place, I know, but I've never encountered this and am doing my best to explain it properly.

So I guess my questions are; What could be causing the naming of the fans to be off like that when both programs use mobo for the info, and why my fans are spinning up while gpu isn't even above 60C?

Thank you and I will provide more info if needed!

GPU Tweak is shit. Afterburner is far better.

Have a look at your temps in a log file, you need to see temp changes every couple seconds. A temp spike could be caused by a bad sensor or a loese fan plug on the card.

Also, maybe post the log and gets extra eyes on it.

Thank you, I'll check out afterburner. If I can properly control the fans I won't be so worried about the spin ups. I've stared at HWMonitor like a hawk during the spinups and nothing is even very hot for like 3 minutes, but will def take a log as well!

Last I checked, you might have trouble uninstalling GPU Tweak, last I used it was V2 and there was a separate download for the uninstaller app, so if that doesnt say much for the tool.

Hi,
HWmonitor isn't much better than gpu tweak

Hwinfo64 sensors only option is far better along with msi afterburner

Lots of conflicts with monitoring utilities is pretty common
Asus makes really crappy software stay away from it and that includes it's really crappy AI Suite & Armoury Crate offerings.

Asus bios is my favorite, but I haven't used much other Asus based software that I know of. My next motherboard was going to be the Dark Hero VIII and next GPU an Asus 3080Ti bc Gigabyte GPUs have always laid down on me like this one and MSI Mobos I have given way too many chances already. Definitely going to switch to HWInfo64 though!

Is 2 monitor ones too much? I just can't control fan speeds with HW and its more accurate than the control apps i had tried previously
2 actively monitoring the same sensor at same time. Afterburner or other 3rd party fan controller works better. I use SpeedFan for my AIO and case fans and Afterburner for GPU fan curve. They use different sensors, you can turn off monitoring some graphs ( sensors ) in Afterburner if/when using other additional fan controllers as I have.

Here is the log, I can't find any differences between the times when it's at 3.2k rpm and normal...

it shows GPU load at 65% aboutz, is this log supposed to at idle?

GPU temps shows 74° thats not idle so yea the fan speed will be near 85%.

Thing is, 85% is less than 3.2k rpm, I tested that when it wasn't doing this weird ramp up and back down thing. 85% is around 2.8k RPM. Plus, it's overriding my Afterburner now. I have it set to 70% and even when it's idle at like 55C it will ramp up to 3k range and back down over and over again. I may have to break and try to reseat the cooler or something...

55C is still high at idle, is there is something running in the back ground? check Task Manager > Performance tab > GPU usage.

If its overriding afterburner, double check your settings are being applied, if thats not it try reinstalling it with or without the tuner.

Sorry, 45C at idle, my bad. And no nothing else other than whatever game I have open. I've reinstalled afterburner twice as well as double checked that all other tuners are Uninstalled. I think the cooler may reseated bc my airflow temp is like 28-30C in my case, so that's all I can think of

How hot did the card get on average in its life and how fast did the fans spin while under load? Might be the fan controller on the card acting up...

I'd say it's hottest was like 67C? I have a ton of fans. The gpu fans have NEVER gone this fast before until last week

Dirty card? Blow it out with an air compressor. Did you do a bios or driver update recently? What brand is your gpu? Some have tailored tools for their gpu's like EVGA precision x1 that might be more useful.

have you looked at your own log? 74.3 is the highest on record. If you're reading that from afterburner, its possible you might be monitoring the wrong value.

You could try cleaning it, as oobymach suggested; is it dusty at all?
