Not sure if i should post this here or in the GPU section but here goes....

If a GPU can stand up to MSI Kombustor before crashing. would you say thats a stable card???

I usually just use kombustor for 30mins and if it passes that its pretty much good to go

I would say so...
But you will not really know until you start playing some games. Some games just don't play too nice with an overclock that others will.
I like to run Vantage or another benchie to also test stability.

well this card is for a friend so Id like to make sure its 100% stable before I hand it over to him.

some moar feedback pls!!

Then play games with it. What does your friend play?

l4d 1 and 2, crysis 2, CODBlops, tf2, killingfloor, bc2, bf2. the usual bunch of shooters

Kombuster, Furmark, and the copies don't stress much more then shaders. Some rops when adding in AA but for the most part just the shaders.

Go OCCT at max settings for GPU with errorcheck -> if it does artifact after 5-10 min then you're not stable. I played a lot with kombuster, furmark and occt. and where kombuster could run for an hour, furmark could run for an hour OCCT spotted errors within one minute.
and yes, there's not that many games that will stress your gpu the same way torture tests will. the only one I can thank of would be METRO 2033.

here are my experience with overclocking gpu too much (radeon 5770)

-core freq too high: often causes ~10sec graphic freezes and image returns after(only the screen freezes, sounds stay normal)
-memory freq too high: artifacts and black/white/gray screen after some time of stress, computer seems to be running and hdd led blink when i alt-tab/ctrlaltdel etc.

I'd say your fine if you run with Kombustor for that long. I run furmark, unigine heaven, 3dmark vantage, and 3d mark 11. If it passes them all I play a very demanding game and run it at max.
Metro 2033 is a pretty dang demanding game if ever i saw one. Gorgeous too..

Try crysis and gta 4! :)

Dont have either of those. But i tested the OC with Crysis 2 using the advance graphics patch configurator with all the settings maxed out.

the card i was trying to OC was a 5850 Xtreme -- Didnt overclock too well. 770|1100

Sold the card straight to a friend more or less right after i found the clocks to be stable through 3-4hrs straight of crysis 2 with everything configured to extreme with the configurator.

---

I was in a hurry to make it stable. I had 2 5850s to test and not a lot of time to test for overclocks.

its all good now anyway

kombuster = furmark with a msi logo

I never run furmark for more then 10min it has a habit of blowing up even the strongest VRM's

ran for 2hrs+ and my card is still very much alive. if your vrms are blowing up, maybe your case or graphics card has inadequate cooling.

never blown a card up on furmark but by design fur-mark pushes a gpu way harder then even the move demanding games
I run it like this
extreme burning mode + aa/af for 10min >allow card to idil for 30 seconds > repeat 3 times

As long as the rest of the system is stable, yes.
