GPU Upgrade

Good Afternoon,

Recently been trolling the interweb and looking at the new "Super" series and its peaked my interest in a GPU upgrade to go along side my newish CPU upgrade (See specs).

I currently have the MSI RTX 3070 Trio and game on a 34" UWQHD monitor and try to hit 100hz/FPS where i can on the highest setting and its struggling i will admit.
I am a sucker for High/Ultra settings and 100FPS, hate to see it lower than the refresh rate. I dont mind enabling all the fancy tech to get it to 100, DLSS/FSR etc.

Im not fussed on RT, not really seen it in action as if it can get it brilliant, if not, no worries.

In my head i've got the 7900XT or the 4070Ti Super. I've seen arguments for both, usually at 1440p or 4k (i do 1.6times on the 4k FPS to get a rough guess for Ultra Wides) but nothing has been concrete enough for me to decide which way.

if you like to crank things up 4080 super is the better card.... but looking at the benchmarks certain games wont hit 100fps unless you crank some settings down... also it was tested with a 7800x3d so it should give you a fairly good idea what to expect...

I would go for the 7900 XT as i'm all for the price to performance and an amd fanboy. The 16GB of Vram is not a big deal but that 20GB's could last you longer. If you like frame gen then AFMF is a cool feature built into the amd drivers "it helps with RT" that is mainly for non FPS titles. I'm not sure what benefits amd cpu and gpu combo have other than SAM.
AMD Adrenaline driver has a bunch more features you can record and stream, OC and undervolt and a few more things you can do in the drivers.

Really depends whether you care about RT. It used to be whether you care about RT AND DLSS 3, but now that AMD has FSR 3 with frame generation that actually works, it's just RT. However I would argue Nvidia has a bigger catalog of games that support DLSS 3 than AMD has for FSR 3. The drivers seem to be fairly equal anymore too. IMO the 7900XT is the clear winner if you only care about rasterized performance. It can also be had cheaper, but that's mostly due to it having been out a while and the 4070 Ti Super having just released.

The 4080 Super according to W1zzard's review is only 1% more powerful than the stock 4080 at pretty much ALL resolutions. If you prefer good raster perf, the 7900XT is the better card, you get a LOT more fps for your dollar.

Intelligent decision here is noting the high rate of market instability. Historical impressions gained from previous "Super" releases should also factor in.

At least wait until prices bottom out. Generational gains are... you are probably in a better place than recognized by pairing new processor with last gen graphics.

Incredibly marginally. They technically have the same power target. The silicon is seemingly slightly better on average in the Super, so you’d get at best 10 or so watts less in a typical gaming scenario. Pretty much completely irrelevant overall.

DLSS3 FG and DLSS/DLAA are much better than the AMD equivalents. Since you'll most likely need to use them as you've stated, to stay above 100 with maxed settings, the 4070 Ti Super is the better choice RT or no (although RT is the new Ultra).

If you've not seen it in action as you've said, good RT in games is very impactful.

If the budget can stretch the new discounted 4080/4080S is a worthy improvement for the high resolutions.

Your PSU isn't good enough for the 7900XTX transients too, but the NVIDIA cards are more power efficient so the 4070 Ti should be fine, the 4080 may have issues though, depending on the OC model.

7900XTX is 360-400W, 4080 is 300-320 W.

The 7900XT isn't worth considering over the 4080/4070 Ti Supers IMO, it's a 4070 Super competitor as reflected by its new prices.

Honestly I would just suck it up and use your 3070 for another 6-9 months before buying an RTX 50xx card.

Upgrading to one generation newer GPU isn't worth it unless you're going up several tiers as well. If you were considering 4080/4090 sure, but not a 3070 to a 4070.

Grab a new ATX 3.0 PSU now, hold off on the upgrade till you can afford a better card or the next gen releases.

If you're a sucker for high fps and high/ultra then you shouldn't be aiming for UWQHD with 3070. I can be easily GPU bound at 130+ fps in certain titles and I'm rocking a 3080 Ti.

Save up, wait for next gen. No point in buying ATX 3.0 PSUs now if manufacturers can't even figure out one type of connector that won't burn out when paired with 4090 level card.
