Turn-based allows deeper level of tactics. Most of the time real-time is about paying attention and reaction time. I've enjoyed both, over time, but I can understand how someone might be put off by one or the other.
Long story short, if you manage to get into TBS, the reward is there

I love turn-based games. Total War series and King's Bounty have demanded thousands of hours of my life. Shadowrun, however, doesn't look very appealing so I'll pass.

Is Total War turn based? I remember earlier in the series I loved to take the high ground and then run down through the ranks of exhausted attackers But at least back then the battles were real time.
Panzer General (and spin offs) were the real gems. If you missed that, it's been redone as Panzer Corps.
