A fast CPU ;).

As far as I know, there are no rendering plugins that take advantage of the GPU. So GPUs are only use for the OpenGL preview (iirc), that any decent card should handle. I could be wrong though, since it's been a while since I last toyed with it.

cpu power is most important the only application i know that makes FULL use of a gpu is autodesks mudbox which on a single 5850 can allow up to 50million quad polygons on screen with depth of field tone mapping multiple lighting sources etc but yea for Autodesk 3dsmax maya etc cpu > then gpu. if your machine bogs down use layers to hide certain objects till render time. but yea

1 particular scene for me single core 57mins to render dual core 42mins tri core 31mins quad 24mins so yea cpu is where its at for rendering gpu is just for preview if you really want to boost performance look for some reviews google being your best friend

for reference

i use

Autodesk Maya 7 8 8.8 2008 and 2010

3ds Max 7

Autodesk mudbox 1.1 and 2010

Pixologic Zbrush 3.1

Blender 3D

of all of them cpu was always the most important that and system ram.
