So, I have many HDDs on my server. Have Hard Disk Sentinel set up to show all drives on taskbar. Noticed one of the Hitachi HUS724040ALE641 SMART health started to drop. first noticed it hit 80% (was at 100% day before) this. Had another same model batch fail A few months back. So, took all the data off it as A precaution. When doing so (heavy use) the health started to drop even more.. down to 72% once data was moved. At this point was just going to remove the drive out of fear. But used Aomei to Zero out the drive. The heath dropped to 50%.

Looking at HardDisk Sentinel (6.01) the overview says it ....

(There are 53 bad sectors on the disk surface. The contents of these sectors were moved to the spare area.
Based on the number of remapping operations, the health of the disk was decreased in different steps.
At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.
It is recommended to examine the log of the disk regularly. All new problems found will be logged there.

It is recommended to backup often to prevent data loss.)

The drive has about 3 months left on its Warranty.. Want to claim it before it is up. So, time to prove their are issues.

Run AIOME Disk Surface test quick .. comes back good 100% 0 Damaged.. Ok
Run AIOME Disk Surface test (not quick) Comes back good 100% 0 Damaged .. WTF

Run Hard Disk Sentinel

Short Self Test
Extended Self-test
Radom Seek test
Surface test- READ TEST
Surface test - Write Test (Destructive -all data will be removed)

all come back good with out issues... WTF ??

However Hard Disk Sentinel Overview Now says the health is at 33% and their are 53 bad sectors... ( i have noticed this 53 number has grown, I think it was 19 when I first seen it at 80% )

I am confused... when I run test on the disk (yes the right one) ..it shows nothing wrong.

I have moved drive to another slot .. still reads the same.
I have moved a good disk to slot it was in .. nothing wrong their.

If the bad sectors count is raising, it means the drive is failing, and its just a matter of time. Can be hours, days, or weeks.

If the drive is one partition, (if its K:), try CHKDSK, run cmd.exe as admin and type inside: "chkdsk k: /r /f"

See what it says about the bad sectors in the end.

You can also try secure erase or low-level format, there is a very tiny chance it might fix the drive, or maybe HDAT2.

What were the drive's temperatures during its service (I see 37°C in idle there)?

I have used HD sentinel to return a WD blue drive before for a client, was all they needed. you might just reach out to see what they say

hdds have spare sectors for this eventuality

drive is junk replace it or lose the data the choice is yours

If the bad sectors count is raising, it means the drive is failing, and its just a matter of time. Can be hours, days, or weeks.

If the drive is one partition, (if its K:), try CHKDSK, run cmd.exe as admin and type inside: "chkdsk k: /r /f"

See what it says about the bad sectors in the end.

You can also try secure erase or low-level format, there is a very tiny chance it might fix the drive, or maybe HDAT2.

Best to just use these apps for the metrics, ignore the advice they give.

If a drive is reallocating sectors it might still pass read/write tests as the reallocation is designed to keep it operational.

However with the way spindles work, once you got even 1 reallocated sector, then its on the path to doom.

I can tell you Western Digital accepted a warranty request from me with only a few bad sectors, and the drive was outside of warranty period (by a few weeks).

it is a 4TB Spinner
throw it out. replace it

The final summary when its done shows how much KB is in-use is useful, and how much is in bad sectors.

If you missed that screen, it should also appear in the event log (if Windows is running) under Windows Logs > Application > Chkdsk or Wininit.

I don't understand why you are ignoring the advice that HD Sentinel is giving you. The bad sector count has increased from 53 to 54 in a single day, there is no dimension in which a hard drive accumulating bad sectors that quickly can be considered anything but failing. The test results are irrelevant, use your head instead (thankfully HD Sentinel is doing that for you) - that drive is dying, it is junk. Stop wasting our time and yours, pull it out of the PC, and throw it in the bin.

Bad sector count raising in a single day is a bad sign. I suggest keep testing this drive and if it keeps raising then, unless its under warranty, hit it with a hammer and throw it out.

At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.

One bad sector is all it takes for me to abandon a drive.

I like HD Tune 2.55 error scan

Also very useful for checking USB thumb drives.

@Shrek does your one bad sector policy apply to SSD's as well? Or just HDD's? I had thought for SSD's bad sectors were expected and normal as they age?

Chkdsk has said there are no bad sectors so if the HDD is empty try formatting it if you hear the drive retrying a read/write request then those sectors are truly bad and not just soft marked as buggered

you could also try HD Tune and scan it so you can see if it's telling porkies or not

One bad sector is all it takes for me to abandon a drive.

At a previous job there was a HDD with one bad sector. That was 8 years ago, and the drive still works (for non essential things) and it still has one bad sector. It's when the number starts to climb it's time to retire the drive.

I am confused... when I run test on the disk (yes the right one) ..it shows nothing wrong.
Its already explained in plain english in HD Sentinel. All storage drives have spare areas (or sectors) to move data to when a sector starts to go bad. So if there is nothing wrong with the data in the spare sector, and you have plenty of spare sectors to go around that the bad sectors will be blocked off by the hdd and not be used. So the HDD will still pass all tests since as far as the tests are concerned it is not accessing those bad sectors, they consider those bad sectors non existent. Your HDD is still fine to use so it doesn't fail any tests. No manufacturing process by humans are perfect, there will always be defects, and to guard against those defects humans use spares, backups and safeguards. So as long as a device still performs within spec, which what your HDD is doing, it will past all tests made by humans. If it doesn't all human made products will be unusable and no one will buy them.

So while currently HD Sentinel says that you have enough spares and therefore you may not be eligible for warranty, you actually can be. If you can prove a fast moving trend of increasing bad sectors, say a new one appears every day or so, you can try to claim warranty. Instead of asking forums, ask a support rep. Tell them hey, I've been monitoring my HDD SMART out of concern lately and notice that bad sectors are increasing with regular frequency. Can I RMA this HDD?

One or a few bad sectors appearing is not grounds for warranty, nor is one or a few appearing every now and then (every few months? years? maybe some weeks?). Like I said above, we are not perfect, so all that happening is in spec. However a continuously appearing bad sectors is not. So just give customer service a try.

You can also try out their diagnostic tools (Hitachi or WD since WD owns them now I guess) to see if you can back up your claims. Present multiple sources, HD Sentinel, Crystal Disk Info, their own tools and so on.

All storage drives have spare areas (or sectors) to move data to when a sector starts to go bad.
And you shouldn't see them appear until all the spares are exhausted

@Shrek does your one bad sector policy apply to SSD's as well? Or just HDD's? I had thought for SSD's bad sectors were expected and normal as they age?

You are right, a different policy for solid state drives
