Allo all! It would seem that we're not a minority after all, a lot of people I know are having the same issues as we are!? They all basically go " Since I upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary, my system has crashed. When I recovered it, I found the problem : my Graphics Card Driver reports:

'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)'

This is also the the problem I myself have been experiencing since the upgrade,
which happened 10 days ago. I've been pulling my hair out trying to nail the problem, that being said, I've been a 'system tech' since the days of MS-DOS 3, so I know what I'm doing! (I hope :P)

So I ran 'Verifier' and it reported that the following drivers were in fact crashing
during boot: dxgkrnl.sys - hal.dll - ntoskrnl.sys!!!

I wonder if DirectX has been changed to only use DX11 and later? HD 3000-5000 series
are only DX10 Cards are they not?

I hope this helps to find a solution as I've tried everything you guys have including a full 'in-place upgrade'.

I own a 'few' systems. The PC I've been having trouble with is my 'work/game-station'.

Spec is as follows:

OS: Windows 10 Ver 1607-Build 14393.105

PSU: Corsair CX500 80plus Cert ATX-PSU

Mainboard: ASRock Conroe 865PE

CPU: Intel Core2Quad Extreme (Black) Edition QX6800 (ES)

RAM: OCZ Platinum XTC DDR PC3200 Dual Channel Kit (2-2-2-5) 4x1Gb

Graphics: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD3850 AGP 512Mb

Audio: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Edition PCI

HDD: IBM/HGST Deskstar 400Gb SATA2 HDD

Optical DD: Pioneer DVR-118 SATA DVD-RW

Network: Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC 10/100

Peripherals: PS/2 Standard 106 Key KB / LogiTech G5 PS/2 Mouse.

as i recall, the agp version of normally pcie cards needed a special driver as they had a bridge chip that converted the agp protocol to pcie . been a while since that system ran and i cant remember if it ever was able to use standard drivers

Everything ran perfectly and error free on Version 1507 build 10.0.10586!!!!!! :/

what does device manager say about it?

try uninstalling it in device manager and tell it to rescan the hardware.

I'd say your hardware is too old to run Windows 10.
The chipset, CPU and GPU wont be fully supported.
Look for legacy drivers for the graphics.

OK, maybe you guys haven't clicked - I didn't at first to be fair -
Everything ran perfectly and error free on Windows 10 Version 1507 build 10.0.10586!!!!!!

I was playing GTA4 in 1080p on the system 2 weeks ago and it ran smooth as glass!!! I think this is a Windows 10 problem not an AMD one!!!

Maybe you'd care to send out your 3850 to a few forum members so we can troubleshoot for you. Not everyone here has 8 year old tech.

No I imagine you don't... I am MCSE and MCSA certified and have a BSc 1st hons Computer Science though, which has got me out of a lot of fixes in the past I can tell you. :) That being officially declared... *burp* this problem is baking my brains... I'm convinced Microsoft have done something to the dxgkrnl.sys driver which is causing an incompatibility problem, and with the release of the new RX series cards, I myself have just bought an RX480-8Gb for my i7 based system, I'm just wondering if somebody is trying manipulate things... it really is not the first time this has happened!

Wait, wasn't there an announcement recently that beginning with Anniversary edition AGP support was gone? Or am I crazy?

Windows 10 does not generaly support AGP graphic cards and said motherboards
while You may have got an earlier build to work it Seems newer builds have removed that potential

Advice System Restore or Reinstall the Version you had working then "Disable all updates "

I dont have any of these and i haven't yet come across a problem that i couldn't fix. Your best bet is to contact microsoft directly and ask them, though Microsoft support is appalling, my CS rep had no idea what 32 or 64bit was nor did she know which version of windows 8.1 i was being allowed to download after i bought it.

@rtwjunkie Yep spot on! I also know that tread as I joined and replied on the very same one mate! :D It looks like MS have dropped the "AGP to CPU Bridge" driver from this current build of Windows 10 which is what is causing all the problems, the thing is though, they've dropped a big one there as there is loads of users complaining about the same thing I am!!! :) That being said, I'm hoping someone will find out a workaround or patch for the problem.

Its been 8 years, time to get with the times. You dont need to spend top dollar for good hardware LGA1136 stuff goes for a fairly reasonable price on ebay and you could put together a system that's probably 10 times faster than yours. An intel i7 950 goes for about £40-50, motherboards will be slightly more expensive. In total I could probably build a system like that for just over £300 but the only issue is none of the parts would be brand new.

Not actually an announcement, but more an indication that the latest build is one step beyond support.

Yep, that is me in that thread reporting that the generic Microsoft-made Intel and VIA CPU to AGP controller driver has been removed by Microsoft on every preview build and beyond after update 1511 (you can still defer upgrades and move yourself to the slowest update ring for the next few months, but after that AGP systems will be rendered worthless on fully updated systems). I tried ripping the AGP driver from the driverstore of a 1511 computer but it was unsigned and even though I got it installed in test mode, it literally still ran at PCI speed. Ironically, the PCIe slot works properly without proper AGP support, but my slot will only run at x1 with the connector taped over as the system won't even post at x4.

NVIDIA cards are slightly better as their drivers install fine, but they still run in PCI mode.

You might try forcing W7 drivers let alone W8 drivers (if they even exist).

This Error would occur on Dual Core Athlon64 Machines with a Nforce Chipset and ATi AGP Graphics card. I'm unsure if Intel Chipsets used AGP GART like Via/Nvidia/SIS/Ali Did

tired from all that bike riding not thinking Straight

Could not find any LGA1136 CPU's or Motherboards on Ebay worldwide
Must Hunt Harder:) must also try BING :)

Hell. Even the BST forum has a load of X58 stuff to be had for dirt cheap Xeon E5620 for $35. Good if you need to squeeze out every last penny/pound. $35 = £26 shipping would probably be $8-13 and it would still work out a bit cheaper then ebay

A lot of people seem to think Windows 10 is bulletproof, they switch their older OS often with old hardware to Win 10 and wonder what's wrong. These times are even good... there were times, nothing worked if you switched from Win 98 to Win XP for example.

I think despite that unit working before, might need to go back to W7 and call it a day.

Don't jump on me, as I ain't messed with AGP in years and have forgotten most of that info.

I do remember, you have let windows know what your system has, to be able to use it. Maybe, the new version just did not have the info it needed to put it back.

So, have you tried to obtain an Intel INF update driver...this is important now... with AGP and PCI support for that chipset? You might have to hunt for it, as the newer ones do not have the AGP support in them.
There is actually no drivers in them; however, the define and address your motherboards devices so the proper drivers can be installed.
Try installing that and the get your video drivers at the Microsoft Update Catalog, here --> ATi Radeon HD 3850 AGP and try them.

I shall repeat again, it's a lost cause (and this is coming from someone who owns a 4CoreDual-SATA2 and 775i65G R3.0 along with a Sapphire HD 3850 AGP, BFG GeForce 7600GS and an handful of lesser cards). The only two chipset vendors that had working AGP functionality on newer OSes and multi-core CPUs are Intel and VIA. Intel's last AGP chipset is the i865 which is from 2004 (and so are the drivers). VIA's last chipsets were the PT880 Ultra and a few other flavors for LGA 775 and Socket 939 which had an AGP slot and a PCIe x4 slot to help people transition to PCIe. ATi/AMD GPUs will always Code 43 on multi-core systems lacking proper AGP support, and NVIDIA GPUs will run in PCI mode.

Summary of AGP chipsets and support off the top of my head:

Intel: Last chipset was from 2004 (i865), official GART for XP and supported by Microsoft's generic AGP driver from Vista through Windows 10 build 1511.
VIA: Last chipset was from 2006 (PT880 and other AMD/Intel derivatives), official GART for XP, possibly had native Vista drivers but has also been supported by Microsoft exactly like the Intel chipset.
NVIDIA: No support beyond XP, especially with multi-core CPUs. Vista was workable but only 32 bit. Seeing as they only made one Vista beta driver for GeForce FX, they wanted you to buy shiny PCIe things right away.
ALi/ULi: Eaten by NVIDIA in 2006, and you know what happens when NVIDIA acquires things (like 3DFx)
SiS: No support beyond XP, couldn't even get my GeForce 7800GS working on a 761GX socket 754 board over 6 years ago.

Either stick with Windows 10 1511 or downgrade to Windows 7/8.1. We're lucky GeForce 6/7 and Radeon 3K/4K even have working drivers from early 2015 and AGP support had to be killed sometime... (not Microsoft's fault that super duper AGP cards were released 4-5 years after AGP was written off).

OK! So, a big thanx to everyone that has jumped on board to help me, you're all super stars! But the legend here is @Jstn7477!
You just called it bang on my friend! I'm sticking to Win10 Version1511. At least I know everything works perfectly on that Version...
well until I here otherwise that is. :)
