Hi folks!

my system is in the Specs on the left here, but i want to know, if anyone knows, i have a Sapphire HD4850 Toxic with the "stock" cooler zalman vf900cu that spins at around 1800rpm driving 47% of the full... what is the voltage of those 1800rpm? it's possible, i.e. with a Thermalright T-rad2 with 2 fans to be more cool and more quiet?

If so, the Arctic Fan 9L (the one with 3 pin) are good for this?

sorry for my bad english :)

If you can then replace the cooling with a AC S1 + fan.

Well, first off, you can adjust the speed of the fan in CCC or with ATI Tray Tools or with Riva Tuner. If you are not overclocking i think your current cooling config with the Zalman is fine. But if are overclocking some better form of cooling may be neccesary depending on what your current temps are. The vf900 is a decent cooler in its own right but the Thermalright T-Rad will be better, especially with 2 92mm fans, it actually beats the AC Accelero S1 Rev.2 by several degrees Celsius.

@ Kaleid: i had the S1 rev2 on a 8800gt and it was great but with total silence (no fan at all) comes higher temperatures.

@KBD: i do not intend to overclock at all, not the cpu nor the gpu or the ram...i'm looking for a very very quiet cooling solution...i cannot adjust the speed of the fan the Toxic edition spins ONLY at 1800rpm and it's not variable, i use Vista x64 if you look in my sys specs and with Vista x64 even if you disable driver signing and uac you cannot do anything of use with ATT, Ati Tray Tools or RivaTuner, i've tried with no success. Therefore i like the vf900 but if i can ad it's not too expensive in the next months become MORE quiet, not even silent, i was looking at the Trad2 if it's more and more quiet (near silent?) with two fans and what fan can i use?at which rpm is good to cool but mantain near silent operation?

have a good day guys and thanks for the replies!

Well, I didn't use my Toxic without any fan at all, and I wouldn't recommend it.
Had a Scythe 800rmp fan on it and the temps were below 60C at load. The VRM's got too hot so I had to use a fan, and 500rpm Scythe slipstream was not enough..since these do get hot and I overclocked a bit too.

Interesting, im not familiar with Vista x64 that much but a lot of guys here use that OS and may be someone can post here and tell you how to resolve your issues with controling the fan speed. In regards to the T-Rad, i dont think its neccesary for you since you are not overclocking, i mean that thing is not cheap, it costs around $55. But if you do get it, i would use only 1 120mm silent fan, like a Scythe S-Flex or one of the silent Cooler Master fans.

Thermalright T-Rad

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/page-248333_11_0.html

Looks to me as the ultimate design as VGA cooler,
as there is no room for more heat pipes.

What i am thinking are that ultra sized coolers , are good only for very extreme use,
as checking VGAs destruction limits :p

I just see the T-Rad design , and noticed that there is no room, under the heatsink (and PCB),
for proper air circulation .

But i do understand , that dual VGA systems , have limited choices in coolers.

Btw. On which clocks are those Toxics running on idle these days? I've read somewhere that 8.12 drivers should lower the idle clocks to something much lower than 500/1100.

most definately, the T-tad is overkill for the OP thats why i suggested he stick with his current setup. Its still a great cooler though, i'm thinking of grabbing it for my 4870, either that or an HR-03 GT. Another thing to consider for him is the T-Rad may not be compatible with the Toxic, Thermalright warns of compatibility issues with the non-reference 4850s.

yea, Catalyst does lower clocks for 2D mode, it does in my case with Cat 8.10 and an ealier Cat 8.9 i'm using with 3450.

Well i strongly believe that the next step after the vf900 , are the Zalman GV 1000 .
But not as it is .

I had in mind as small mod for it ... Thermaltake smart fan2 90mm.

Any way , lets stay on topic.
In time i will present this project, as soon i will have the GV 1000 at hand.

@kiriakost: i personally love zalman (and korean girls too? sorry if it's OT for me :D ) btw, there are some kind of issue: the Catalyst 8.11 are the last complete WHQL and the 8.12 not yet, i prefer system stability to performance at all costs...

@KBD: you are correct saying that the TRad is for "pushing to the limit then fry" a vga card, but on the other hand what dopes a card can cool it mor quietly if you don't overclock at all...am i wrong?

@Kaleid: Toxic these days in my system runs idle at 36°C...not bad at all but i would gladly sacrifice 2 or 3°C in idle and/or load to the altar of very very quiet operation (i have my system in my room and if i want download some during the night, when i sleep, i'd love to be very very quiet.....or if i put the pc in the living room near the tv set....and so on....)

Glad to hear you, and anyone who can give any ideas to the discussion is appreciated!

One more off topic question.. still about the Toxic idle clocks..forget the temps, not interested in that..:)

Q: What are the idle clocks of the Toxic with cat 8.12? I'm interested in knowing if it runs at 500/1100 for everyone else too (still).

@Kaleid: i cannot say what are the idle temps in Catalyst 8.12 because i'm still waiting when they come out in the WHQL flavour, then i'll put in. (are they now? in that case you have my escuses).

i have a question for you: have you tried the ATI Stream? like folding@home or so on? is it stable?

btw the cat 8,12 still does not have the avivo package ready.............
and the CCC is only 32bit.
so we can consider the 8.12 pack whql but not yet "complete"?

Thanks in advice to you all!

whql .. its a check about , windows power saving modes and specs .
The current 8.12 does that .
At list on the HD3850.
So the 8.12 whql , will not be the next expected Miracle .
At list to me.

Again. I do not care about the temps...thats easy to fix, but I care about idle power consumption. Which is why I wish to know what mhz the core and mem are running at idle.
