hdd keeps crashing pc

i have a hdd sata which is dodgey keeps crashing my system its not in one folder its every where i access
but it has all my backup stuff on it photos videos of family music
i know there a people out there that can do this for me but would rather do it myself as there is private stuff on there i dont want one seeing
is there a way i can do this
or is it just gonna be a slow process of grab what i can before a crash happens

if you got access to another computer, connect it to it. Copy all the files over in a "New Folder". Then reformat the drive. Stick it back into the your pc. Make sure it's working right. I had this same problem awhile back. It end up beening the HD was formated to a FAT32 and Vista didn't like that.
