HDD write speed

This I don't believe, unless you mean wireless.

Nope wired gig nic was some no name cumquat in a cheapo HP laptop that was like $350 bucks brand new

Thx Lorraine, I did that till my order came in, just bought a 250Gbt pen drive but apparently there's some sort of bug on windows that downgrades usb transfer, so I'll stick with the cable.
I found the absolute best and quickest and cheapest way is to buy a 2.5" usb3./.1 external enclosure, they are five quid use it as it's meant yet its akso an impromptu transfer dock 300Mb/s.

I expect copying the files between two primary drives has messed up the permissions on the os drive ,a repair should work in safe mode but usb win10 loaded repair tends to fix most others.

I still don't believe it was a problem with the NIC. And are you saying WiFi was equally slow? Sound like either software or general network issues. Even the "crappy" Realtek wired NICs are very stable. I mean sure everything can be a dud, but defective NICs is a pretty rare problem (unless you've done something stupid, like shorting cables) and even more unlikely is a partly working NIC.
