Hello,

im trying to play a movie with a DTS-HD MA 7.1 sound track.

now my receiver does not support DTS-HD Decoding, so im trying to use the player (PowerDVD Ultra) to decode it into uncompressed LPCM.

the problem here is the software says INPUT is 7.1 HD, but its only outputting 6 channels.
if you cant help with powerDVD, could you recomend another Blu Ray player with support for LPCM output in 7.1 HD

edit: program is updated. Receiver also does not support 7.1 analogue in :(

OUTPUT mode is PASS THROUGH or the current setting only.

You sure your movie is in 7.1? Blu ray supports up to 7.1, but there are very few discs that actually use more than 5.1. What's the movie/programming?

Power DVD will decode whatever the movie is in.
DTS HD MA > DTS HD MA
LPCM > LPCM

Your receiver will play whatever it can, same concept as above. DTM > DTM / LPCM > LPCM

What is driving the audio? I assume a vga card but which one, your sp say a 260 which only did 2 channel iirc.

I think everything is working fine and that 2 common misconceptions are are work here. 1) That all Blu ray movies are in 7.1. They are not. There are only a handful that actually are in 7.1. 99% of them are still 5.1 or 2.0. 2) That setting Windows to 7.1 converts everything to 7.1. That is not true either. That just means that soundtracks up to 7.1 will be passed in their original state.

the Movie is encoded with DTS-HD 7.1, http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Details.php?ifb=TRONLegacy_786936808568
the movie is Tron Legacy.

i am using a GTX560 with FULL HDMI out ( NO DVI TO HDMI ).
Support for HDMI 1.4a including GPU accelerated Blu-ray 3D support, x.v.Color, HDMI Deep Color, and 7.1 digital surround sound.
(using HDMI 1.3)
8 channel LPCM, 192 kHz, 24 bit audio capability has been supported since HDMI 1.0

if you look at the first picture i posted, it shows the audio is 7.1 input, if i try to output compressed DTS HD, the output will change to :compressed data.

if i open the disk, you can clearly see the audio file is in fact 7.1 DTS-HD MA

i need to output uncompressed 7.1 audio as my receiver does not support DTS-HD, but it does support 7.1 uncompressed LPCM.

IMO your limit is because of the powerDVD software. for whatever reason its decided your system can only handle 6 channels of audio, and has therefore downmixed for you.

since your system cant handle DTS-HD... its probably right on your capabilities.

does your receiver even support 7.1 inputs? does it have any settings related to that? are you sure it can actually handle 7.1 uncompressed PCM? does that standard cap at 5.1?

Since HDMI is a two way street, your Sony receiver will have informed Win 7 what formats and number of channels it is capable of decoding. If you click on the Sound option in the Control Panel, select the correct audio device, and then click on the Configure button, Win 7 will show us all the audio options your Sony receiver has told 7 that it is capable of dealing with. We need a screenshot of that.

thats the info i was missing and thinking of in the post above yours, that his receiver had somehow limited the channels and outputs automatically. (or powerDVD had done so)

I suspect it is his Sony, but that Configure option in Win 7 will confirm it. I have not heard of any PCM issues with Power DVD.

it does indeed support 7.1, i have use'd test files to make sure. the ones that say "front left" Side Right " Back Left"
files are encoded with LPCM and played with VLC with 7.1 selected under audio device. every speaker works as it plays through the test. back speaker says "back left/right" and side speakers say "Side left/right"
Here is a direct download link from Microsoft with the test files i used to check the suround sound.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/b/1/6b17045c-6ce8-4dc4-a3b5-2717b8711fc8/8Channel.exe

as you can see DTS-HD is not supported, but it does support 8 channels. it also supports PL2 x upmixing.

Well...it does look like you have all the hardware you need. Let's try it this way...DTS-HD is a combo technology. It is composed of a core DTS soundtrack with the HD part as an extension. If you bitstream a 7.1 DTS-MA soundtrack to a receiver that can do 7.1 regular DTS, you should get 7.1 DTS from the receiver. Switch Power DVD to bitstream output and see what happens. You'll lose some fidelity, obviously, but you should get 7.1.

in that case, i'd say the problem lies with powerDVD and its conversion from DTS-HD

i suppose you could try VLC and MPC-HC (with AC3 filter) and see how they go, but i dont know how well they handle BD disks without something like anyDVD-HD to decrypt them first.

^what he said above about bitstream mode may also do the trick. he seems to have more direct experience with this than me.

ok will try all that has been said above,

i have already tried "bitstream" out from Powerdvd. my receiver shows 3/2.1 with the rear speakers disabled.

i have riped the blu ray to my HDD so any form of DRM should not get in the way. i dont have a Blu ray player ... or any optical drive, so i use the one in my dads pc.

EDIT:MPC-HC dosnt seem to support any higher then 5.1.... and is only finding 2.0 input using AC3 graphs. VLC only see's a DTS file in 5.1, not DTS-HD 7.1

Both PowerDVD and TSmuxer can see the 7.1 DTS-HD file.

EDIT2:
changing advanced options to any of the 16bit 44/48/96/ 24bit 44/48/96 did not help.

That would be because I'm old. :) Or, more precisely, because I've been messing with 5.1 digital streaming since it rolled out almost 15 years ago now. I'm a little worried about this one, though. We're battling software (Power DVD) and firmware (Sony). If there is a bug or limitations in either, we just might not be able to get this to work as it should. The fact that we are playing this back from a file minus the DRM might also be a contributing factor. I'm hoping that the DTS 7.1 thing will work if we bitstream from PowerDVD.

going to try arcsoft total theater and see if that can solve the problem, it does show it can output as PCM....

if not ill try to decrypt from DTS-HD to PCM and stick it back together.

Stupid piece of shit power dvd. I tried that with 7,8,9, and the new 10 and hated every one of them. Glad I only had trials. Glad that fixed it. :)

Glad to hear you solved it. Unfortunately, Tron Legacy kinda sucks regardless of the soundtrack you use. :)

By the way, in fairness to PowerDVD, if it was the trial that you were having the problem with, the full regular might be patched to fix the problem you are experiencing. It's not really fair to hold the trial responsible for problems, if it was the trial you were using. It's something to keep in mind anyway before you go bashing PowerDVD or any other software for that matter.

That would be the old man who tests software for a living talking. :)

And no, power dvd just sucks in general. Never had good luck with the full copies or the trials. I know I said I tried trials which I have but then later "got them for free" to make sure it would/wouldn't work. I've been using tmt3 or tmt5 since I built my htpc and wrote the guide in my sig.

idk man.... daft punk made the sound track, there for it cant be a bad movie :D

neither the trail or full version of PowerDVD solved the problem,....... (i may have downloaded a crack for PowerDVD ultra to see if that would solve the problem after looking at the feature differences between each.) iv come to the conclusion of always trying before buying... after wasting so much money on Horrible games.... never again.

currently using a trail version of total media, if it holds up to the challenge i shall buy it..... not really, ill get dad to buy it :laugh::roll:

he bought that corel winDVD crap for blu ray playback... i have never liked it and it wont even play independence day from the disk itself on his PC, tried two separate disks, then riped the movie and tried VLC.... worked first time :D PowerDVD also played both disks.
(latest version of WinDVD)
