I have a sata hdd and I have some files on it that I need to use but I dont want to put it in my case, so I bought

to connect it by usb port but I dont know my pc just detects a usb device but does not see the drive. What can I do?

Sata HDD ( 3 1/2" ???? ) probably needs its own power source to work not enough power via usb 3 adapter cable

I tried sata ssd too but it does not detect the drive also

Also, if the drive isn't partitioned and formatted, it won't show up.

open your case and plug in a sata and power cable

I've used a couple of those adapters and they do the same, navigate through the start menu to Windows System > This PC and it should be listed there as long as the drive is a 2.5" and doesn't require external power..

Check in disk management if it shows up at all. You can also try diskpart in admin mode, then use the command 'list disk'.

It should work. Maybe the drives bad. You don't need external power

Joust go to your folder and PC and it should be there. You will have to take ownership of the drive if its out of another PC. Just click and wait. It should open in a few minutes

All else fails just open your case

if you look at the cables here, you'll see they have dual plugs built into them. if the one you have does not, you need to apply power.

The OP has the one highlighted in yellow/orange that doesn't support an external power source.

I've never seen a SATA-to-USB adapter that doesn't have the combined data+power plug. That of course doesn't mean that it supplies 12V power for 3.5" HDDs, which some (but far from all) have a header for adding.

@mrthanhnguyen is your HDD a 2.5" or 3.5" drive? Does it sound like it's spinning up when you connect it? Can you feel movement/vibration in the drive?

When plugging in these adaptors use the motherboard USB port. Front panel port may not be able to deliver enough current.
