help - i need a win 11 version of something like print screen 2000

it works fine on win 10 but wont work on win 11 at all

snip and sketch is useless trash and it takes 5 steps

just to cut and print something you want to clip out of a screen image

it seems al the new screen capture tools want to go crazy with video capture

with editing and posting in the cloud BS instead of just a basic simple, let me cut and print something

can anyone please help me find a new win 11 replacement for printkey 2000?

Win+shift+s doesn’t work for what you need?

no i dont want to have to save a file somewhere else just to use a different program to open it to print it

thats why print key 2000 was so great, it was no BS, just clip it out and hit print and its done

Greenshot has lots of features you might want. Custom key bindings, screen, area, capture last region (screenshot of the same area you previously captured), ask save location or save to folder, play a sound when screen captured, &c. Very solid application.

I've used Greenshot in conjunction with AutoHotKey for capturing images or other data that would have taken hours.

do you have win 11?

i tried to install greenspot and it said something about windows using its hot keys so it couldnt run

i got it installed, but i couldnt run it so i uninstaled it and kept looking, same thing happened with screenrec

so far i have tried, Screenrec and Greenshot, but couldnt get either one to run on win 11 ????

most of the others in the top 10 of screen capture utilities are designed for video capturing stuff or they have no built in print feature

What's wrong with Paint?

What's wrong with Paint?
paint? not sure what you mean?

im not trying to edit anything

i want to clip out a random part of a screen image, and then click on a button in the same utility to print it

You can do that in paint, unless I misunderstand what you are trying to do, I have clipped out sections of screenshots to save and they can be printed.

Way back when I needed more surface area of pages, I would print my tabs in MSPaint.
That was in the Win95/XP era.
You could probably catch an entire program Window with Alt+Prt, paste it into MSPaint and click Print.
I understand the convenience of clip+print but Win11 is the kind of disaster where the ambulance is part of the wreck.
Good luck.

ya, its crazy the way they seem to go out of their way to make things work so different that its not backwards compatible at all.

they took away the "run in older version of windows" feature as well in the right click menu

by the way, spell check doesnt work in win 11 either, it gives you the red line, but there is no corrected spelling shown to auto correct it

there is a trick to edit the registry to revert right click menu back to the previous win 10 and previous win OS style

i will have to live with whatever it is, its not like i have much choice, but its frustrating dealing with small shit like this at times

im not talking about editing images, lets say you reply to a post and its super great info, so i want to screen snip just your post from this page and print it to read later

thats what i am talking about, just grab something to see like a snoopy cartoon, and then print it, but without the need to save the image first, and then use a picture editing tool to print it

I use Greenshot on Win11 without issue.
ScreenToGif is an awesome complement should you ever need to something of that nature.
For your immediate needs, if don’t need select region capability, the mentioned ctrl+printscreen / alt+printscreen paired with mspaint may indeed serve your purpose.

ok, i will have to give it another try then

i went to reinstall it and it said its still running, sure enough it was still there

nothing i click on will activate it, it just keeps saying its already running

but i have no taskbar icon to click on and if i click on it from programs it just says its already running

so is it completely invisible with no window that opens or anything? this is weird

if its installed and running, how do i activate it with no icons to click on?

i watched the video on how to use greenshot, but none of those things are on my computer, no boxes open up, i have no clickable tabs or links, nothing

how do you make it open?

win+shift+s -> mark whatever you want to clip
click on notification that a screenshot have been saved (it is autosaved in the screenshots folder in your pictures folder)
ctrl+p -> print image
done

No need to use another program to print clips

It's not so much backwards compatibility until you start trying to load antique apps. It hasn't been a problem for me but it's still a surprise that somehow a relic like Wakan still works for me on 10/11 but the most egregious issue with 11 is the workflow. There isn't one. This OS and its numerous forced design changes, jumplist problems, forced taskbar settings, click funnel navigation structure and missing feature management makes everything about this an absolute nightmare for creators of any stretch. It's bad for business. I understand that there are already Win11 exclusive apps in the wild but all the useful tools have already been pulled, leaving me wondering once again WHY use this junk when everything works on 10?

Then I look at the hardware loadout forcing Win11 as the floor and we are so screwed coming and going. Hardware scheduling is the first of many casualties in this hostage situation.

Mhm. I'm guessing the kernel switcher tool has somehow been blacklisted as well.

Oh, you need something very special for that. I believe the time of Evernote has come and gone.
You can still cut-paste clippings directly into OneNote but good luck getting the app to work.
I think Obsidian still makes it possible but there's nothing about this situation that makes me believe you're ready for that app and its design.
Figma and Canva might be okay but I'm not frequent in either of them so not sure about the Print function.
win+shift+s -> mark whatever you want to clip
He's fighting Win11 jank. Those apps and their married shortcuts are a bust.

SnagIt by Techsmith. https://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.html It's worth it.

thanks, i will give it a try

ok, i downloaded the free version, but it still says i need to create an account to sign in and enter the software key

i want a free tool so im not doing either of those

they sure love to overcomplicate things, thats for sure.

the last reboot i did fixed greenshot, not sure how but it did, yet i know i had done 3 or 4 reboots already

but now i have the icon on task bar and the program opens and works now.

so far, it definitely looks better then windows snipping tool

so far i cant get it to work just with the print screen button, but after i open greenshot, then and only then, will it let me clip something

otherwise print screen button turn on the windows snipping tool, maybe if i uninstall snipping tool it will fix that, its late so i will have to play with it tomorrow

so far its looking like a good replacement for print key, but it will take a bit to get used to it

Is greenshot clearing your clipboard when opening the app? It's a screenshot program, it shouldn't be misbehaving like that. I think Excel has this issue sometimes.

uninstalling sipping tool fixed it, they were fighting each other for use of the print screen button.

now when i hit print screen, the tool opens up to let you snip part of the screen. :toast:

i think this will fit my needs, time for bed now

For greenshot, you can open settings by right clicking on the system tray icon. personally, I preferring the option to screenshot using ctrl + / and alt + / for area and window captures. It was a little closer than the print screen button. there's also a magnifier built in so you know exactly the pixel range.

I'm glad you got it working. I hadn't heard of that error before. However, the first modification I make on Windows is always removing all appx packages, so it makes sense you saw the error when I had not.

Did you try the snipping tool?

i think the issue was, when installing it, i didnt check the box to start with windows,

so it didnt create the task bar icon, or remove snip from using the print screen button

thats all i can think of, but it was weird

you cannot print directly from the snipping tool, that is the problem i have with it

I'm assuming "printing" as in to actual printer to get ink/paper copy, and NOT into a .xyz file ?

You can print directly from the Snipping tool, you run the tool, hit new, make your box around whatever and at the top of the picture under the first tab called "file" theres print, ctrl +P, at the bottom. ;)

You beat me to it, Snip tool does it and it's pretty easy.

Open it.
Ctrl + N for a new snip
Highlight the area you want to clip
It opens in a new window, then Ctrl + P and you can print.
