Help I Think I Short Circuited My Mobo

hi everyone. I recently purchased an evga gtx 285 waterblock

so i installed it into the loop and everything

start up my pc. Everything boots up. Except i get a red led on my 780i signifying that my cpu's overheating. PC automatically shuts off. I take out the CPU block and put some more thermal paste on it. Start it up again. Same problem. I do that one more time (don't ask me why) and turn on my computer. It turns on for a split second. Then turns off. Since then i have not been able to turn it on. I see a blue LED and when i press the power led i get a yellow led along with the blue led. However, fans don't start up, LED indicator doesn't post and radiator doesn't start up.

is there anyways i can fix my pc?

i feel like an idiot

btw my watercooling setup was a single rad(i know-too small) with a gtx 285 waterblock and a cpu waterblock in the loop

remove the ram and leave only 1 stick and see if it boots

firstly, DO NOT put more thermal paste on the cpu!!!
you only need a drop, evenly spread, to form a thin film on the cpu...

secondly, remove all components from the mobo and look for damp spots on your mobo. If you find none, then add one memory module, the gfx card, and the boot drive... if it boots, then check with the other memory module. if that works too, then thy adding the other drives....

It just might be removing the cause of the short circuit fixes the problem.

remove the mobo from your case and set up on an antistatic bag (eg mobo bag) and try there.... just to make sure if your mobo shortcircuits on the mobo tray!

I've never have understood what's the point in operating electronic equipment on a conductive material like antistatic bags - just to prevent short ciruits. I mean, the whole purposes of antistatic bags is to be conductive.

the outside isnt antistatic only the inside

did you pc work before you put the block on the gpu?

remove ALL components and set them on a table the mobo you can put ontop of the mobo box, then connect them all in slowly and double check your work

the mobo needs 2 power connections make sure those are connected too

Ok. I made sure that both connectors are conected. No difference. I forgot to mention earlier that i had never plugged in my GPU into the pci slot...cause i'm scared that if i had shortcircuited my mobo then i had short circuited my gpu as well....is that the case?

From the way you describe adding more thermal paste...You don't add it. You clean it off with rubbing alcohol and reapply. You only need a small amount, about as much as this smiley face , if you have gobs of thermal paste, it could be causing the problem.

You don't need to spread it out either. The pressure from the heatsink will do all that for you. ALthough it doesnt hurt to spread it out but not needed.

Also the error could be because there isn't a video card installed.

Also noticed you are watercooled, make sure there are no leaks.

that's exactly the thing. I may have water damaged it. I'm not sure. Although i didn't see anywater, something definately broke i just don't know what it is. Since water cooling was the only thing i installed...i'll assume it's that...onlu have 1 stick of ram inside...still doesn't work....i tried it once w/ the vid card inside...no difference

You built the loop yourself? Did you leak test it? While everything is out, run the loop and check for leaks. The white oxidation on the back of your motherboard is a very good indicator that you had/have a leak. Or... it's just dust that builds up back there, but if it was dust it would blow off easily.

yeps. Built the loop myself. The thing is that i only leak tested it for half an hour so i think it may have leaked

so i think at this point we could call it water damage? Would alcohol swabs, as Yin suggested, fix my mobo?

and would my cpu/gpu/ram be damaged as well?

well it all depends on how fast you've stopped electricity being passed through the components?

WAIT WAIT WAIT ok. I realized that a couple drops dripped out of my reservoir because i didn't cap my rad properly :shadedshu stupid me. So i did that, and bled the pump for a day. It's completely sealed now So would wiping all my components with 70% isopropyl alcohol work?

and how would i be able to repair water damaged equipment?
