Ah, I see. I once blew up a motherboard trying to push a Phenom x4 too far. Better safe than sorry in that case.

I fried an MSI 760g AM3+ with 3+1phase
I had a Phenom X2 555 that unlocked to a 125w B65...x4 955...
And then I Overclocked it as far as it could go... Lasted 9 months or so.

Yeah it kinda sucks I have to clock it so low but it is what it is. My old Phenom II 1700T clocked to 4.0Ghz stable across all six cores. Man those where the days!
But I am by no means done collecting 960Ts, so who knows, perhaps I will find another that unlocks to X6 4Ghz, only time will tell.
Guys: thanks for the tips and advice. I think I'm going to go with something like this, the MSI RX580 Gaming X:

RX580 8GB is definitely on my short list. As far as clocks go: this Phenom II chip is capable of 3.8Ghz but the VRMs get a little toasty at that speed (only 3+1 power phase). I've found 3.5Ghz to be the sweet spot for maintaining both low voltage and decent performance. I can also leave the side cover on while gaming and don't have to worry about temps whatsoever.

If I had a 890FX or 990FX board as a spare Id throw it at you but I dont unfortunately.

My brother has one.

Id like to mess with it hut unsure if my mobo has core unlocking...

I go to Wikipedia to find the list of First Person Shooters. Then I sort by date. With the right video card I should be able to play up to about the year 2016-2017. The latest games take up way to much space anyways, so I'm taking the scenic route in getting there. lol

Take a look at this:
The beautifully over-engineered 8GB Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 is just $180 today
https://www.pcworld.com/article/3388033/the-beautifully-over-engineered-8gb-asus-rog-strix-radeon-rx-580-is-just-180-today.amp.html

Really a nice product - thanks for the link. Over engineered for sure and those three fans must keep everything pretty frosty. However, I don't have enough room in my case for something like that. Standard RX580 is about right. Also need to pick up the 8 pin power lead.

That's one thing I've noticed about newer games. We're talking like 50GB or more per game. All 3 Stalker games together weigh in under 16GB, and they're huge. :kookoo:

I popped the very same board with my 965 BE running @ 4.0Ghz. Lasted about a year, if I remember correctly. The Biostar 3+1 phase seems to hold up much better, but I don't want to "push" my luck.

hard to answer the question w/o knowing ....

1. What is your monitor resolution ?

2. Does your monitor have G-Sync or Freesync capability ?

3. What is the refresh rate and is it on this list ?

4. Will you be overclocking the GFX card ?

Classic Lightboost Blur Reduction (near bottom of page)

- An RX 580 will come in at or about $20 below your budget limit. The better performers are still running about $250 - $280.

- A GTX 1060 6GB draws less power, runs cooler and is quieter than the 560. They are running about $200 - $220 with the better performers as above but supply is getting scarce

- The 1660 6GB uses a hair more power than the 1060 and significantly less than the 58. Temps and noise are significantly lower. Most are running about $219 so if you take this route, you'll need to throw an extra $20 at it.

Looking at performance, we see that the AIB 1660 is about 22% (100/82) faster than the reference 580. TPU was able to overclock it another 14.8% so overclocked it is 40% faster (100 x 1.148 / 82) than the reference 580.

https://tpucdn.com/reviews/MSI/RX_580_Mech_2/images/overclocked-performance.png

From the above we see that the MSI Mech 580 (highest OC TPU obtained among their 580 reviews.overclocks 12.7% (66.7 / 59.2). So using the Refernce 580 as a baseline

AIB 1660 is 40.0 % faster than reference 580
AIB 580 is 12.7 % faster than reference 580

The relative performance gain is therefore 24% and to get that you need to invest 10% more money. Recommendation, w/o knowing anything about your monitor, therefore are:

A. If you can manage the extra $20, the 1660 is an easy choice regardless of whether you overclock. The performance gained far exceeds the increase in cost and it's lower power, lower noise and lower temps than the 580 alternative.

B. If the $200 is a hard limit and you will be overclocking, the extra headroom available on 1060 6GB will be well worth it. Again, lower power, lower noise, lower temps.

C. If not overclocking it's a tossup. The RX 580 has a 1% overall performance advantage in TPUs test suite. Which to choose would depend upon the particular card you find at what price and what features matter to you more... the 1% performance advantage or the lower noise / power / temp.

Things not considered due to lack of info ....

a) You have a particular fondness for either the red team or green team.
b) You have a G-Sync or Freesyn monitor in which case you'd want to match card with monitor.

@John Naylor

If I could give your post two thumbs up, I would.

Please be patient while I break down your response and frame my questions.

- I have an affinity towards the red team, however I want to leave both options on the table at this point
- What matters most in this case is power draw, not relative performance since we are dealing with an antiquated system anyway.
-This means the ideal contender will have quiet operation, less heat and still allow for a good gaming experience given the other hardware we are working with (CPU, memory etc).
-I want to minimize heat as the case only has one 120mm fan for exhaust and case runs a little hot as is with the hyper 212 in place over a 150W TDP CPU.
-I will not be overclocking the video card. However, it would be nice to have that capability for sometime in the future
-From what you are saying it looks like I should lean towards the GTX 1060 or the GTX 1660...
-Pretty firm on the price point of $200.

Avoid the 1060 3Gb version, it's not a reduced Vram version of the 1060 6Gb, it has a different chip and doesn't perform the same.

El cheapo RX 570 or 580 would be my first choice, though depending on whether you prefer lower power draw/temps you could pick Nvidia instead.

You can buy a GTX 970 for $100 on eBay. It performs about the same as a 570 4GB or 1060 3GB. You can buy a GTX 980 4GB for $140 on eBay, it performs about the same as a 1060 6GB / 580 8GB. You can buy a 980ti for $200, it performs the same as a 1070 or Vega 56.

I got my 980 classified off of Kijiji for 200 bucks cnd, honestly best 200 I ever spent lol. I also got a 970 ftw for 150 the first gen, 6+6 power. I cant overclock it, cant control the fan speed, because if I do, it will throttle itself like crazy. It will go from 1400 down to like 975. The only way to fix it that I can find is to pull the card, pull the bios battery and let it sit. If I just leave it alone, it runs at 1400 all day, and it rips pretty good! But if I were you, I would lean away from Maxwell and save for a 1660ti or grab a 1070 when they drop a bit. Compared to a 980, the only thing a 1060 has over it is more ram, and less power consumption if you pay the bills. There is a 980 classified on ebay right now for 220 u.s. Its been up for awhile now, I considered buying it a few times to toy with sli, and to maybe replace my 970 :D

Edit:

Even though 980 is a 4gb card, it can still play fc5 maxed with hd textures enabled at 60fps, not sure how. Though in doom the option to use more than 4gb doesn't appear any more.

Thanks guys. I will weigh my options carefully.

Well I just installed Wolfenstein: The New Order. I found another 80GB SSD laying around and added that to my Phenom II rig, installation alone is 45GB, yikes!

Ill get some screenshots so you can see how terrible the gaming experience really is with my GeForce 740GT. lol

… with 2GB of RAM you'd think it would be a performer but it falls flat on its face with the newer games. GPU easily pegged at 100%

Does a boxed up video card like this include the 8 pin power connector or is that something else I'm gonna need to purchase?
Doesn't look like it comes with one going by this unboxing video

Im going to send some pictures your way. Might already be set up with the 8 pin connection with the existing PSU (Antec NeoPower 650W Blue)

EDIT: Looks like I'm good to go. Here is a quote from the Newegg product description for my PSU:

The presence of one Main connector (20 + 4 pin), one 12V (4-pin), six Molex, four SATA, two Floppy, and two PCI-E (1 x 8-pin, 1 x 6-pin) connectors are more than enough for all your components. Three +12V output circuits provide maximum stable power for the CPU independently of the other peripherals. Bring new power to your system with this remarkable supply!
