Help needed for a failing 2 pins fan

Hi,

2 Years ago I bought 2 icybox IB-544 series backplanes, each has its own rear exhaust fan (HD7015S12L , 80x80x15 , 12Volts 0.10A)

Recently one of them started to produce really loud and annoying noise. The fan quiet down after 2 minutes, when the computer is fully loaded and reach the desktop. I took it off and the fan spins nicely on its own, i have dusted it off with a compressed air can but nothing changed.

As you can see, the fans cable has a non-standard 2 pins connector like the VGA HS on older cards, and i'm having a hard time to find spare parts.

Do you know where i could purchase this kind of fans online (preferably EU retailer) ?

Thanks in advance for help.

I now you bought one already, but you can try oiling the bearing of the old one. That fixes loud fans most of the time for me.

Thanks for your input newtekie1.

I have one of those contact cleaner spray (KF F2) at work, i will use it tomorrow in total confidence on the faulty fan, now that i have found some spare parts if things goes wrong.

The one Toothless has is a different connector. If you're ever really hard up finding one again, just buy one of the correct size and splice on the connector from the old one.

Those sprays don't really do a good job at this. They work for a short term, but the lubricant dries up pretty quickly.

I use this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0083V8MAS/?tag=tec06d-20

You can get it at any local hardware store. Then just peel the sticker up on the back of the fan, and sometimes you have to remove the little center plug. That should give you access to the fan shaft. Put 1 or 2 drops in, and seal it back up. Do use more than 2 drops, you don't need to, and it will just make a mess.

I use shaver oil (probably the same thing) or graphite with an evaporating liquid carrier (the straight powdered stuff is carcinogenic if inhaled and can make a huge mess if you're not careful with it).

That's always good to know, so i will skip the contact cleaner spray. Would you care telling me if paraphine / glycerol oil would do the job too ? We have several liters of this fluid at work.

i would buy whatever fan fits and swap the plug.. oiling the bearing is only likely to produce a temporary fix..

Applied some good old WD40 and it's absolutely silent once again.

WD40 is mostly mineral spirits which will evaporate. The lubricant is similar to kerosene (but slightly heavier). It's not a long term fix.
